At the Nov. 13 meeting of the Lynbrook Board of Education, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, Operations and Information Systems Dr. Paul Lynch, presented an overview of recommended facility upgrades and projects for the board to consider for completion throughout the district over the next several years.

Dr. Lynch began by outlining upgrades with which the Strategic Planning Committee recommended moving forward in the 2014-15 school year, including the installation of a new boiler at the high school and an air conditioner at South Middle School. The two projects are estimated to cost $1.25 million.

Dr. Lynch also presented details about a number of other projects that the committee recommended for consideration over the coming years. These projects, which include an addition to the high school, the purchase of backup generators and the installation of elevators at Marion Street School, are too large and costly to be handled through the Capital Reserve Fund. Therefore the committee recommended that the board explore the possibility of presenting a bond proposal to voters to handle these larger projects.

In the superintendent’s report, Dr. Melissa Burak invited parents to attend the PTA Joint Council meeting on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. At that meeting, a presentation titled “Acronyms of Education” will be conducted by members of the Lynbrook administrative team. The presentation will explain how the district is strategically and thoughtfully strengthening instruction using a wide range of available resources.

Dr. Burak also reported on the success of the recent Superintendent's Conference Day, which included staff development dealing with curriculum writing, project-oriented instruction, crisis intervention and technology instruction, as well as some Common Core curriculum modifications.

Dr. Burak was also pleased to report that the new baseball field at South Middle School is now complete, with plans for the new track at South Middle being reviewed by the state. She explained that the district is hoping for a quick approval from the state so they can begin construction by the summer.

Board President Alicemarie Bresnihan also read a statement about the district’s ongoing work to provide a safe environment for students and to educate them about the dangers of substance abuse. She asked parents to continue to partner with the district in its efforts to protect our students.

Two students were honored for achievements. Lynbrook High School senior Vivek Shah was recognized as a semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. South Middle School sixth-grader Jack Hoffman was acknowledged for his fourth-place finish in FOX TV’s “MasterChef Junior” competition with chef Gordon Ramsey.
