Lynbrook Student Newspaper Wins State Awards

High school wins big in Empire State School Press Association competition.

Lynbrook High School's student newspaper, Horizon, won a total of eight awards
from the Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) annual competition, including a Silver Award for Best All-Around Publication. This competition accepts entries of student publications from all over New York state.

Lynbrook students also garnered several awards in individual categories. For the
Feature Story category, Kathryn McDougal earned a Silver Award and Kasey Bury
received an Honorable Mention. Silver Awards also went to Kacey Carter for Best
Personality Interview Story and to Alec Stern for Best Entertainment Review Portfolio.

Maria Randazzo received a Bronze Award for Best Sports Feature. Honorable Mentions went to Samantha Frankel (Class of 2010) for Special Event Coverage and to Danny Kramer for In-Depth Coverage.

Horizon's staff members, under the direction of faculty advisor Jessica Sanders,
have consistently brought home high honors from this annual competition. They have also won top honors at the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards.

Lynbrook High School offers a college-accredited course in journalism through Molloy College, through which many of the Horizon staff members learn the fundamentals of journalism. Some students work on the paper as part of their
coursework, while others contribute to it as part of a club activity.
