Lynbrook Students Attend College Prep Meeting

LHS guidance counselors show seniors, parents how to begin application process.

A new school year has only just begun, but the Lynbrook High School guidance office is already urging seniors to start filling out applications and putting together resumes for colleges. The department held a college planning workshop for students and their parents at the high school on Sept. 13.

Guidance counselors explained in detail what students will need when applying to colleges, reviewed important deadlines, and offered tips on writing essays and interviewing.

According to the counselors, colleges will be looking at several things when reviewing a prospective student's application: GPA, transcripts, SAT and/or ACT scores, college essays, resumes, letters of recommendation, and how a student performs in an interview.

Guidance Chairperson Laurie Mitchell explained that all college applications must be submitted to Lynbrook's guidance office no later than Nov. 19. Even if a student is applying online, they still have to submit the Application Processing Form to the guidance office. This will ensure that all applications are submitted correctly to the college.

Students taking advantage of early decision or early action should sign up in the guidance office, so counselors know that those applications need to be processed more quickly.

The counselors went through a nearly 40-slide PowerPoint presentation, providing a wealth of information. Mitchell acknowledged that the massive amount of material discussed could make one anxious, but she assured students and parents that they would have all their questions answered when meeting individually with their respective guidance counselor.

"Tonight's goal really is just to give you a little bit more of an overview of what the process is as you're moving forward," Mitchell said. "Be mindful of deadlines. Make sure you're gathering the information so it's not something thats left to the last minute."
