Lynbrook Students Electrify Their Strings With Violinist Mark Wood

By Rosemary Leonetti

The Lynbrook High School Symphony Orchestra recently received a rare opportunity to perform with world-renowned electric violinist Mark Wood, a co-founder of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Through Wood’s “Electrify Your Strings!” program, the young musicians participated in two days of intensive and dynamic rehearsals to perfect their musical precision, performance technique and stage presence. During those rehearsals, Wood shared not only his professional expertise, but also his boundless enthusiasm and love for music.

On the evening of Nov. 2, the student-musicians brought down the house with their first-ever rock orchestra concert, performing with the Emmy-winning composer himself. The concert, which took place in the high school’s Branciforte Auditorium, played to a sold-out crowd.

I love empowering students about the importance of music education,” said Wood. “The gift of music is that it gives our confidence and personality the ability to shine in all areas of our lives. We are not timid when we are playing music.”

"I developed a new appreciation for rock music that is listened to by people around the world, and especially for the arrangements written by Mark Wood," said senior Josh Tierney.

Students will be able to continue making beautiful electrified music using a Stingray electric violin donated by the Electrify Your Strings program. Thanks to the generosity of EYS sponsor D'Addario Bowed, their school will also receive $1,000 worth of free strings and accessories.

The Lynbrook District, which was named a 2013 Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, gives more than 1,900 students the opportunity to participate in the over 50 different ensembles, which include concert and symphonic bands; wind ensembles; jazz band and marching band; brass ensemble; full, string and chamber orchestras; and mixed, select and concert choirs.
