Lynbrook Students Read Like Rock Stars

Guest readers, classroom projects, and rock and roll hamsters part of festivities.

The theme of this year’s PARP Week at Lynbrook’s was “Read Like a Rock Star.”

Festivities included guest readers, classroom projects such as writing fan letters to rock stars, and creating book jacket illustrations.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit from children’s author Darren Sardelli, who spent two days in their school. He gave group presentations about the writing process, where he gets his ideas, and how books and poems are published. He also got the students involved in acting out some of his silly poems.

On the second day of his visit, he conducted workshops that allowed the children to unleash their own creative talents by brainstorming together to create a poem entitled “Crazy Day, ” which featured an ice cream bed, a two-headed monkey in a hot air balloon, ketchup rain, and, of course, a rock star hamster. After the workshop, students returned to their classrooms to create their own crazy poems.

PARP, which stands for Parents as Reading Partners, is a PTA-sponsored event that encourages children to read with their families. As a special gift, the West End PTA gave each student at the school a copy of one of Mr. Sardelli’s books to add to their home libraries.
