The story, which is loosely based on James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific,” revolves around an American nurse during World War II who falls in love with a French plantation owner, but cannot accept his mixed-race children. A second romance involves a U.S. lieutenant who falls in love with a Polynesian girl.

The musical, which has many light moments in the first act, shows its serious side in Act 2, where the issue of racial prejudice is poignantly explored through the evolution of these two love stories.
