Lynbrook Varsity Teams Have Much to Celebrate

High school hosts Varsity Spring Sports Recognition Night.

The Lynbrook spring sports season was a momentous one.

From a top-five ranking in Long Island for the boys golf team en route to a conference championship, a conference title for the girls team, to the dominating conference championship run by the boys track team.

“We had two golf teams win conference championship, the girls lacrosse team win a conference championship, and the boys track team as well,” said Lynbrook Athletic Director Tom Graham. “Every team made the playoffs, so we had a pretty successful spring season this year.”

The high school held its annual Varsity Spring Sports Recognition Night last Thursday.

The boys golf team earned its top five ranking and the conference title by the leadership of All-County players Matt Hirsch and Luke Reilly, while Dean Sisun received Honorable Mention All-County honors. The girls golf team surprised many with its first-ever conference championship in the program’s history.

The boys track team won the conference title to add to an already impressive history for the Owls. The girls finished in a solid fourth place at the county championships.

The girls lacrosse team won the conference championship after its defeat of Bethpage late in the season under the leadership of Honorable Mention All-County players Nicole Pataky and Julie Wigand. Despite a second-round exit from the playoffs at the hands of Garden City, ranked second in the nation, Lynbrook earned a top-25 ranking in New York State.

The boys lacrosse team made the playoffs and earned a trip to Hofstra, but eventually fell to South Side in the Class B quarterfinals. At the Senior Awards Night on June 6, Ethan Mirenberg, along with Pataky, won the Alumni Memorial Scholarship Award. Steve Marrandino won the Buckley Brothers Memorial Scholarship and Chris King received the 2011 Unsung Hero Award.

The Lynbrook baseball team earned a playoff berth for the first time since 2006 and made a remarkable run to the county quarterfinals before falling in the third and deciding game to Island Trees. Brian Bilello and Alex Weingarten earned All-Conference honors. Andrew Marks won the Scholar Athlete Award along with Nicole Punzi, and Jack Pender, Will Norris and Bobby Negron received the William Wren Baseball Scholarship.

The softball team finished its season strong after a slow start, earning a playoff berth. Casey Keller received All-County honors while starting pitcher Rebecca Tisdell earned All-Conference honors.

Both Lynbrook tennis teams experienced stellar seasons to wrap up the spring sports.

“We have tremendous support from our students and parents every year,” Graham added. “It has been a great year for athletics and has been nothing but very positive things.”
