Malverne High School Helps Haiti's Orphans

Students from the Black Studies Club collect supplies and donations to send to Haiti.

When Florence Balay, a chemistry teacher at Malverne High School returned from her summer trip to a Haiti orphanage, she could not shake the images she had gathered out of her mind.

Balay, who also serves as the adviser of the Black Studies Club at Malverne High School shared her experiences with her students and asked for their help.

The group put together a special drive to collect school supplies for the students at the Haiti orphanage. For several weeks, the club held fundraisers and drives for the donations before packaging everything for transport. Balay used the connections she established there to arrange for the supplies to shop directly to the orphanage.

Reports estimate that there are half a million orphans in Haiti. Children make up nearly half of the country's population, and many lost their parents, their homes, their schools and their belongings when the devastating earthquake struck last January. UNICEF Ambassador Martin Bell has even suggested evacuating these orphans from the country and temporarily relocating them until Haiti gets back on its feet and the living conditions for these children are less bleak.
