Malverne Parent Says State Testing Like Monty Python's 'Holy Grail' [Video]

Jeanne D’Esposito urges district officials to stop putting so much emphasis on NYS assessments.

It's no secret that most educators and many parents are not fans of the standardized testing their students are subjected to by New York State nor the increased emphasis their districts, politicians and the media continue to give them.

But few have been able to sum up their frustration with the testing craze as eloquently and comically as Jeanne D’Esposito. Tired of seeing her child, a student in the Malverne school district, come home with packets of practice tests for the NYS assessments in Math and English Language Arts, and fed up with how the "rigged" exams have devalued the academic progress made by Malverne's teachers and students, D'Esposito delivered this speech Wednesday night during the September business meeting of the Malverne school board.

Thank you for your passion, Jeanne! I have a dream, that one day politicians will begin to hear from more parents like you in regards to this destructive mentality of testing. While there needs to be assessments and measures to a student's progress, this hyper focus on poorly created, low-level thinking tests needs to stop. This focus on testing keeps public education stunted in its growth. We are not raising independent thinkers with this test focus, we are training children, instead to expect life in filled with multiple choice questions. It is time for parents and K-12 educators to take a stand against this test-mania! Jeanne- may your passion ignite others!

@ joyce, i am a malverne school district graduate, class of 2003, I am a successful school psychologist in a long island school district and would not trade my malverne education. Not only did it prepare me academically, but it prepared me socially. I resent you calling my alma mater, as well as my entire successful family's-generations past- alma mater 'a dump'. If you believe the world is one way, i suggest you try to find somewhere else to live. You seem to be socially inept if you think you are going to find something different anywhere you go. Malverne employs some of the best, dedicated, hardworking individuals you will ever find. They are able to work with people of different cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds as well as educate students with diverse levels of preparedness for learning. Public schools have no, i repeat no, selective enrollment. Therefore, making my previous statement that much more meaningful. If you feel so strongly about malverne schools being "a dump" then why do you waste your time commenting...just leave.

Big kahuna & Joyce livingstone I think you should check your facts. You obviously have no idea what your talking about. If you don't use our excellent schools maybe you should keep your negative opinions to yourself.

check your facts. GO to newday and look at Malverne HS The testing results stink. Dont make this racial- it has to do with the fact that a large majority of the residents send thier children to Private school because they are not comfortable with the acedemic program at malverne. Make the school better and the will stay.sorry scout mom the results speak for themselves!
