Malverne Parents Get Educated for College

A Parent University focused on ways parents can help their students succeed in college.

The work you put in today will pay off tomorrow.

That idea was the focus of the first ever Parent University at Malverne High School on Sept. 26. The evening presentation educated parents on ways they can help their students prepare for and succeed in college.

Malverne High School Assistant Principal Vincent Romano began by explaining that to properly prepare for the academic rigors of college, high school students should be taking the most challenging courses possible, and should be working hard to earn the highest grades possible. This is a course of action that has been supported by teachers, counselors and administrators for many years, with more Malverne students taking and succeeding in college-level AP courses than ever before.

Following this discussion, science teacher Christopher Brescia encouraged parents to collaborate and communicate with teachers to help support the success of their children.

“Be proactive rather than reactive,” he advised. A parent information packet given out at the meeting was filled with useful information, such as how parents could partner with teachers to encourage their children to "learn well, stay safe, participate and graduate," the district's motto.

A guest panel of speakers from Molloy College rounded out the presentation. Among the topics addressed were college readiness skills and which courses students should be taking now to develop said skills, time management, critical reading, analytical writing and note taking. Parents also received tips for helping their student prepare at home.

The evening concluded with a demonstration by the school’s award-winning FIRST Robotics Team, who made it all the way to Nationals last year.
