Malverne School District Residents Will Decide $312K Capital Project

Board of Education adds proposition to May 15 ballot to fix roof at the high school.

In addition to the and the up for election, Malverne school district residents will also vote on a proposition for a capital project on May 15.

After determining that there was a need to undertake roof reconstruction work at Malverne High School's gynamisium, the Board of Education passed a resolution Tuesday night to add a proposition to the ballot next month. If it is approved by voters, the district would be authorized to appropriate and expend up to $312,000 from its Capital Reserve Fund, which was established by voters on May 19, 2009, to perform the necessary work.

Details about the project are described in a memorandum report prepared by the district’s architects, which is on file and available for public inspection in the office of the district clerk at no additional cost to taxpayers.

The vote on the capital proposition, as well as the school budget and Board of Education elections will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 15 inside Howard T. Herber Middle School.

Those not already registered to vote, can do so on May 10 at Malverne High School between 8:30 am and 11:30 am or from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Administration Building.

Again, why is it that this district even exists? At least 4 separate properties serving less than 1800 kids, at nearly $50 million annual budget. 4 sets of buildings to manage, maintain and have unexpected roof replacements. Absurd duplication and waste. Split it up and merge it with other districts. Malverne residents are suckers.

How many times do we (taxpayers) have to replace or repair the high school roof? When was the last repair and/or replacement? What do they do, hold football practice on the roof?

How about the work that was to be done at Herber and the heating problems at the HS and Herber that should have been done this past year?? Herber needs a lot of work done. Locker replacements, bathrooms replaced, windows replaced, wiring updated, cafe enlarged, ceilings and floors replaced, exterminated, air conditioning in the auditorium and heating system replaced! Our children and staff deserve better and in the long run money will be saved. My kids are totally freezing or boiling and on windy days say the wind comes through the windows.

This is a joke! You mean to tell us this incompetent board just realized the roof needed replacing? What kind of Custodial Engineers are there that aren't aware of a deteriorating condition before it becomes an emergency? And what idiotic, incompetent, derelict board, spends the additional money they received as soon as they got it without considering contingencies or using the funds to lower the bloated budget due to their overinflated salaries? Malverne residents wake up to this gross incompetency and criminal dereliction of responsibility!

IN reconsidering this, I cannot believe that this board did not know about this and planned how they would jam it to the taxpayer. I cannot believe that between the time the budget was approved by the board recently and this announcement 2 weeks before the vote that they had time to call and get a report from the District's architects!! This had to be a well planned taxpayer surprise!
