West Hempstead, Lynbrook and Malverne Schools Staying Closed Thursday

Districts cancels classes for Nov. 1 as community recovers from Sandy.

All public schools in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook will remain closed for a fourth-straight day due to Hurricane Sandy, along with all local Catholic schools.

The Lynbrook School District made the decision Wednesday morning to close Thursday, Nov. 1. Malverne school officials announced Wednesday afternoon that they too have canceled classes and after-school activities for Thursday, Nov. 1, citing "ongoing concerns with hazardous driving conditions."

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., West Hempstead Schools Superintendent John Hogan told Patch that the district's five public schools would also remain closed "due to the continuing power outage and clean up efforts in our community."

Prior to the storm, Our Lady of Peace School in Lynbrook, Our Lady of Lourdes School in Malverne and St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead had already planned to be closed Thursday, Nov. 1, for All Saints Day and Friday, Nov. 2, for a diocesan teachers conference. Classes are expected to resume at all three schools Monday.

Patch was still awaiting word the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County and Grace Lutheran Day School. Check back for more updates on school closings throughout the day.
