UPDATED: 14 Inches Fall in Malverne-West Hempstead, Snow Day for All Students

Fourteen inches drop on Malverne and West Hempstead.

It's a snow day for students in Malverne and West Hempstead!

Residents will have to dig out of over a foot of snow that has been dropped on the area over the past 24 hours. The latest measurements - from Floral Park as of 3:45 a.m. - show 14 inches of new snow has fallen since Round 1 of the storm started Wednesday morning.

The heavy snowfall has created hazardous driving conditions, reduced service on the LIRR  and prompted ALL area schools to CLOSE. (You know it's a bad one, when even the city schools shut their doors!)

The village of plows and salt trucks, along with ones for the Town of Hempstead, have been working all day and night and will continue to do so until roads are cleared, but residents are encouraged to avoid driving if possible.

As of 5:30am, nine branches of the Long Island Rail Road, including the West Hempstead, Long Beach, Babylon, Hempstead and Far Rockaway lines, were operating with a reduced weekday AM Rush schedule. Click here for more details.

Patch will keep you posted on any changes to the train service.

As of 6:45am, all area schools in Malverne and West Hempstead are closed, and schools in Valley Stream District 13.   (See below for the full list of local places that have announced closings and canceled events.)

The following schools will be closed on Thursday:

  • :
  • All Valley Stream District 13 Schools

Other closings:

  • : Thursday morning's Minyan has been canceled.
  • : Closed

Patch will continue to keep a close eye on the storm, and keep you updated on service interruptions, power outages, emergencies, school closings and more.  If you know of an event that has been canceled or a business that is closing due to the storm, leave a comment below or e-mail Tara.Conry@Patch.com with the information.

Stay warm and drive safe!
