Malverne-West Hempstead-Lynbrook Weekend Guide: Oct. 13-14

Get a handle on the busy weekend ahead.

In the next 48 hours, there will be 11 big events going on in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook including three homecoming celebrations, three parades, three fairs and a star-studded dancing competition.

It's by far one of the busiest weekends we've seen in these communities so to make sure you don't miss anything, here's a handy guide to what's going on this Saturday and Sunday.

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

Lynbrook Expo When: 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Where: Greis Park, Lynbrook What: The 22nd Annual Lynbrook Expo will feature health and wellness displays, flu shots, oral cancer screenings and mammograms by appointment. There will be classic cars, live entertainment, food, antiques, crafts, rides, displays for the military, police and fire departments and a civil war encampment. The Town of Hempstead's Mobile Town Hall will also be providing pet adoptions, passport services and child I.D. kits. Through Operation Medicine Cabinet residents can also dispose of unwanted prescription pills and other drugs.

Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps Tag Sale When: 9 a.m.- 4p.m. Where: MVAC Headquarters (11 Hempstead Ave., Malverne) What: Members will be selling furniture, toys, clothing, knick-knacks and more to raise funds for their new headquarters.

Malverne H.S. Homecoming: When: Parade at noon followed by 1:30 p.m. game Where: Parade travels up Ocean Avenue, down Lakeview Avenue and finishes at Malverne High School, where a festival featuring face-painting and giveaways will take place as the Mules Varsity Football team takes on Mineola. 

West Hempstead H.S. Homecoming: When: Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. followed by 1:30 p.m. game Where: Parade starts at Chestnut Street School, heads down Roosevelt Street and then Nassau Boulevard, finishing at West Hempstead High School. A festival featuring activities for kids, food and more will follow as the Rams take on East Rockaway.

Lynbrook Charity Softball Game When: 5 p.m. Where: Greis Park, Lynbrook What: For the third consecutive year, members of the Lynbrook Baptist Church and Lynbrook volunteer firefighters will be competing in a charity softball game to raise funds for Nassau County Firefighter's Operation Wounded Warrior. Tickets are $5 and include a chance to win an Apple iPad.

West Hempstead Westerners Championship Party and Parade When: 5 p.m. (party); 6 p.m.. (parade) Where: Party will be held at the West Hempstead firehouse (295 Hempstead Tpke., West Hempstead). The parade will begin at Hempstead Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard and head down Hempstead Avenue to Maplewood Street and end at the firehouse.

Dancing with the Malverne Stars When: 7 p.m. Where: Lynbrook Knights of Columbus (78 Hempstead Ave., Lynbrook) What: Five Malverne couples who have been training for weeks will compete in a ballroom dancing style competition for judges' scores. Participants will enjoy the live performances, gourmet sandwiches and unlimited beer, wine and soda. Tickets are $45 per person and require reservations. Sunday, Oct. 14 

Malverne 5K Run/Walk for Education When: 8:30 a.m. (Kids races and late registration); 9 a.m. (5K); Where: Late registration will be held inside Howard T. Herber Middle School (75 Ocean Ave., Malverne). The 5K will start on Wicks Lane and end at Malverne High School. The kids races will be held at the high school track. Late registration fee is $20. Kids 16 and under pay only $10. All proceeds from the event will go to the Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation, which hosts the event along with the Malverne Rotary.

West Hempstead Street Fair When: 10 a.m.-5p.m. Where: Hempstead Avenue between Westminster Road to Colony Street What: The 11th Annual West Hempstead Street Fair will feature local family fun, rides, clowns, music, a magician, food and vendors. 

Malverne Wildcats Homecoming: When: 9 a.m. (Peanuts game); 10 a.m. (Pee-Wees); 11 a.m. (Midgets); 12:30 p.m. (Ponies); 2 p.m. (Seniors) Where: Malverne High School (80 Ocean Ave., Malverne) What: Join the Malverne Wildcats youth football and cheerleading program for a day of food, fun and five back-to-back games

Harvest Festival When: 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Where: The corner of Merrick Road and Peninsula Boulevard in Lynbrook What: Hosted by Saint John's Lutheran Church, this festival will include a yard sale, raffles, hot food, baked goods, games, and music.
