Our Lady of Peace Hosts Social Studies Fair

Projects were on display at the evening event on May 23.

Submitted by Julie O'Connell.

The 4th and 5th grade students at Our Lady of Peace School recently participated in the annual Social Studies Fair as part of their Social Studies Curriculum.

Students in fourth grade, after learning about the history of New York, are able to pick a landmark or historical spot or place anywhere in New York to research. Many of the students are lucky enough to live close to these places and visit them as part of their research. Topics such as Central Park, Cooperstown, The Bronx Zoo, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, The Brooklyn Bridge and many more were all represented.

Students in fifth grade, as part of their curriculum, were asked to select a country to research and display. The students learn about history, landforms, currency, famous places, famous people, food, government, tourism, etc. while doing their in depth research. Countries like France, Ireland, Germany, England, Australia, Ecuador, Mexico, Scotland, etc were all represented. They brought visitors on a little trip to these countries around the world.

The 4th and 5th graders were asked to write a paper on their topic/country including all important information. They also designed a tri-fold board to display at the fair. They were able to dress the part, bring food/drink that goes with their topic and set up small displays. It was a wonderful learning experience and the students truly enrich what they have learned with this project.

All projects were on display at the evening event on May 23, 2013. The event was facilitated by the 4th and 5th grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Kristine Fitzgerald and is assisted by the 5th grade teacher Mrs. Mary Carroll.
