Parents Urged Not To Drop Students at End of St. Johns by Schreiber

Accident waiting to happen, police say.

Port Washington Police have a message for those dropping students off at St. Johns Place behind Schreiber High School in the morning. Drop them off at the corner of Monfort Road and St. John's Place where there are stop signs.

"They are advised not to turn at the stop sign and then proceed to drive their children to the end of St. John's Place where they are observed then backing up or make a u-turn while numerous children are walking to school," said Police Commissioner Angela Mullins.

The practice of driving students all the way to St. Johns Place, police say, is an accident waiting to happen.

“Someone is going to get hit,” said Detective Anthony Guzzello.

And while a gate at the perimeter of school property is open at the start and end of the school day, police say, it is an exit only, not an entrance, for drivers after dropping off or picking up students.

So police ask parents to drop students off at the corner of Monfort Road and St. John's Place where there are stop signs.

As Mullins put it: "The safety of our children is paramount."

Bogart is another location. The crossing guard does an excellent job there, but parents insist on disobeying traffic devises as well as her directive. Please keep in mind that all children must remain safe and putting your need to be on time for a scheduled appointment does not not make you privy for disregarding the laws and safety of others.

Parents using the Monfort raceway (and other drop off locations) in the morning - PLEASE STOP AT ALL OF THE STOP SIGNS, especially on Orchard Farm Road. The police are on alert and will be ticketing as necessary to combat the blatent disregard for traffic rules in this, and all neighborhoods frequented for school drop-offs. Out of respect for the local homeowners, and the children and commuters walking in these neighborhoods to and from school and the train(without sidewalks, and in the snow and ice!) PLEASE show care and common civility. You cannot possibly be in that big of a hurry that 3 seconds at a stop sign should make a difference.

Wait until a parent in a rush hits and kills a child then and only then will something be done. The way some people drive in Port Washington is more then just shocking! Up and down Main Street drivers do tings which should merit having their driving priveledges revoked for several months. We need to see more flashing lights and tickets being written. Every single youngster on their walk home from school are in danger the minute they step off the curb. Tell you child take off the ear buds and put down the cell phone and PAY ATTENTION TO TRAFFIC.

They are entitled because the only person that matters is them. Who are they? Just about everyone who resides in Port Washington. These are the pathetic entitled Port residents-they are everwhere-like insects.

Don't worry, PWPD will be there in 20 minutes to make sure everyone blocking the road has already left...
