Sept. 18: Teaching Award, Child ID Program, Frost Valley and More

A look at the top stories for this Tuesday in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook.

Here are the top five headlines for Sept. 18.

  1. Excellence in Teaching Award: See which Malverne school district teacher recently received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York State.
  2. Too Old to Drive: At what point should elderly drivers hang up their keys? A new report released Monday showed that state requirements for older drivers are all over the map. Find out more later this morning and share your thoughts.
  3. Save Frost Valley: As they continue to chip away at their goal of raising $44K to preserve the Malverne school district's sixth grade trip to Frost Valley, students and parents on the SVF Committee scrubbed cars earlier this month. Click here to view photos of the event and find out about the group's next fundraiser, which will feature an American Idol star.
  4. Child ID Program: The Jumping Gym, located at 300 Hempstead Tpke. in West Hempstead, is hosting a free Child ID program today. Bring your kids to the gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to have their photos taken by New York Life, which will be issuing ID cards on the spot. Parents will receive a card with their child's photo and fingerprint, a photocopy and safety information while kids can stay to play in the gym.
  5. Memory Project: How can art help children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned or disadvantaged? Find out later today how a group of Lynbrook High School students used their talents to do just that.
