The Malverne Board of Education announced the Class of 2013 valedictorian and salutatorian for Malverne High School Tuesday night at its monthly board meeting.
Jessica Mele and Sheniqua Young will serve as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.
“These young ladies epitomize what we try to instill in all of our students here at Malverne High School,” Principal James Brown said. “They are the cream of the crop, bar none.”
“These are some of the finest student I’ve ever seen come through our school system,” Superintendent Dr. James H. Hunderfund said. “They’ve excelled in the high school.”
In addition to the announcement of the top graduates, the board recognized Malverne students for their achievements in athletics and arts.
Members of the Malverne girls varsity basketball team were on hand to receive certificates from Malverne Athletic Director Patricia Desormeau, as the team was honored for being a scholar team. Malverne set a new record for scholar athletes, as 47 students were named scholar athletes in the winter season.
All-County art and music students were also recognized by the board, as the students were presented certificates from music and fine arts chairperson Michael Messina. The students art work was on exhibit throughout the library and will go on to be displayed at the Ruth S. Harley University Center at Adelphi University.
At the end of the meeting, board President Marguerite O’Connor encouraged residents to come out to the Budget Review on March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Malverne High School Library and the Board of Education/Budget Adoption on April 9 at 8 p.m., also in high school library.
