Triumphs Take Centerstage at Malverne H.S. Graduation

Controversy over top ranked students does not detract from Malverne's 2011 graduation.

Although the weeks leading up to graduation for Malverne High School's Class of 2011 were marked by and unrest, the focus of the ceremony Friday night was on the students' achievements, their abilities to overcome adversity and the people who have propelled them to success.

The night was filled with beautiful speeches by Malverne's top three students - Valedictorian Aalique Grahame, Salutatorian Sarah St. John and third-ranked senior Xavier Bernard -  and their class president, Francina Smith. Each one reflected on the obstacles they have had to overcome - from losing a home and a parent to starting over in a new country and dealing with the pressures of striving to do their best. They also took the time to thank the loved ones who have supported them along their journey to achieving their goals and reminded their fellow classmates that the end of their time at Malverne is only the beginning.

Inclement weather forced the June 24 ceremony inside Howard T. Herber Middle School and limited the number of family who could attend, but it did not put a damper on the spirits of the roughly 150 graduates, who proudly crossed the stage to accept their diplomas.
