West Hempstead Selects New H.S. Principal

Chestnut Street School Principal Dan Rehman will takeover the vacant position.

That's one vacancy down.

The West Hempstead school board approved the appointment of Dan Rehman to serve as high school principal, effective late this month, during a nearly four-hour meeting Tuesday night.

Rehman, who was principal of the Kindergarten center at Chestnut Street School, fills the vacancy left behind after the district announced in late June that former High School Principal would not be returning. No further details were disclosed regarding Viteritti's departure.

"He officially assumes the position on Aug. 28," Superintendent John Hogan said after the board voted, adding that he was looking forward to working with Rehman in his new role.

A number of the parents present at the meeting expressed their approval of the selection for high school principal.

"I don't think you could have made a better choice," Irene Martinez told the board and administration members present.

"I'm thrilled," said Chris Fennes. "He's an excellent choice. He's vested."

Hogan pointed out though that while the high school gains a new principal there will be a loss to Chestnut Street School. As they commence a formal search for a permanent replacement, Julie Healy will serve as interim principal.

Healy had worked as the art director at the school until she was recently excessed due to budget cuts.

"Welcome back," Hogan told her.

As for the vacant seat on the school board, which also opened up in late June when Trustee Anthony Brita resigned, the board now has two options - appoint someone or leave the position empty - as the deadline for holding a special election has passed. Check Patch tomorrow for the full story.
