West Hempstead Student Earns Gold in International Competition

Chris McAvoy wins at the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad in Texas.

West Hempstead High School science research student Chris McAvoy travelled to Texas earlier this month and returned home with a gold medal.

McAvoy competed in the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad in Houston as an International Finalist during the week of May 2.  He became the first West Hempstead student to ever advance to the international level after he competed in two rounds of the Long Island Science Engineering Fair, a regional INTEL affiliated competition.

In Houston, McAvoy competed with the top high school researchers from all over the world, 1,000 participants from 68 countries and 42 states.  Each one had to demonstrate and explain their innovative projects and inventions, promoting the maintenance of global sustainability at the George R. Brown Convention Center of Houston.

He was awarded a gold medal for his project, "Biomimetic Wind Turbine Blade Power Analysis: Airfoil Design," along with a check for $1,000 for scoring in the top 5 percent of the competition.
