West Hempstead Students Earn 'Note'-Worthy Recognition

Seniors Amar Benkhoukha and Oswaldo Machado bring their musical talents to the state level.

Two West Hempstead High School seniors earned state recognition this month for their hard work and musical talents.

Amar Benkhoukha was the only student from West Hempstead to be selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Mixed Chorus. He achieved this prestigious honor by receiving a perfect score (100) at last year's NYSSMA Solo Rating festival. The performance will take place at Eastman Hall at the University of Rochester in December.

His classmate, Oswaldo Machado, became the only student in West Hempstead High School's history to submit a composition for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Young Composers Concert. Ozzie's "Symphony No. 1" was one of numerous pieces that he has worked on over the past few years. His three years of music theory courses and impressive piano skills have helped him to become an aspiring young composer.
