West Hempstead Students Win LI Science Awards

Four local students took home prizes at Long Island Science Congress.

Four students from West Hempstead High School and Middle School won big at the annual Long Island Science Congress this month.

Sophomore Chris McAvoy alone took home four awards at the ceremony on May 23. McAvoy, one of the high school's science research students, earned the "Best in Grade Award" of $150, the "Trusz Award for Most Distinguished Categorical Project in Earth Space and Energy" of $250, the Green Planet Award of $100 and Highest Honors.  

Fellow sophomore Steven Trezza also received an Honors plaque. Trezza is known in the community for with Operation Splash to clean up the local waterways. He was also one of three local students by the West Hempstead Rotary to attend a regional youth leadership program.

For the Junior Long Island Science Congress, which includes grades 7 and 8, West Hempstead Middle School students Amanda Lombardo and Christian Vale were each awarded an Honors plaque.

Over 300 students from over 40 schools participated in this year's Long Island Science Congress. Each submitted project proposals, scientific abstracts of their research, and attractive display boards illustrating the scientific method used to judges, who applied a rubric of scientific criteria to choose award winners.

The special awards ceremony was held in honor of the top winners of the hundreds of students competing in the highly competitive science fair.
