W.H. Recognizes Rams' Accomplishments

West Hempstead's sports teams were celebrated Thursday night.

Ram pride was high Thursday night as West Hempstead High School honored the accomplishments of some of its student athletes.

Several players from each of the high school's boys teams went home with awards. (

Track & Field

Two of West Hempstead's Track & Field athletes were recognized for their All-County achievements at the awards banquet dinner held at Pompei on June 9.

Senior Scott Leeb and junior, Justin Boatwright both earned the honors for their performances at the Class A County championships.

Leeb finished in third place in the long jump event and Boatwright won with his third place effort in the 100 meter dash and runner-up in the 200 meter.

Soccer:

The Varsity soccer team received the district's sportsmanship award, while senior Tom Valerio was named team MVP and All-Conference. Ameen Zubi earned Most Improved Player.

Basketball:

Valerio also received the coaches award from Coach Ed Cosgrove for his contributions to the basketball team and All-Conference. Sophomore guard Tyree Glascoe was named team MVP and Ousmane Camara took home Most Improved Player.

Baseball:

A big winner for the night, Valerio, also took home the Coach's Award for the varsity baseball team, of which he is a co-captain. Valerio intends to major in physical education at Nassau Community College.

Jason Arasmo, the team's other captain and a four-year varsity player, was named MVP and All-Conference.

Bowling:

Arasmo, who plans to pursue graphic design at Adelphi Unversity, also received the Most Improved Player award for bowling.

Football:

The coaches award honor for football was given to two players, senior Brandon Zapelli and senior defensive player, John Gomez. Sophomore Dan Njoku was voted the Most Improved.

Volleyball:

The MVP award for the boys varsity volleyball team went to senior Vinny Gazzara, the team's co-captain, who was also selected for All-County. Senior Tim Wirth and sophomore assist-man Eric Finkelstein shared the Coaches Award.

Lacrosse:

Gazzara, who will be attending Manhattan College in the fall to major in radiation therapy, also received the Most Improve Player Award for the boys lax team.

Tennis:

Senior singles player Milan Maksimovic was awarded the MVP award for tennis, while Junior doubles player Carl Abelido was voted Most Improved by coach Charles DeAngelo.
