Daily Sports Digest: Oct. 14

An interactive, daily digest of scores from schools in the Town of Hempstead and a place for you to add information and images for all youth sports.

BELLMORE

Kennedy

Girls Soccer: Kennedy defeated Port Washington on the road 1-0 behind a first half goal from Krista Trinidad off of a pass from Danielle Gilman. The win was the Cougars’ fourth in a row and the shutout was Nicole Liotta’s seventh of the season. Kennedy is 8-1-1 overall and trails Calhoun in Conference AA-II.

Mepham

Boys Soccer: Mepham completed a great second half comeback at home against Great Neck South, the conferences’ winner last season, by a 4-3 final. The Pirates were down 3-2 with just 10 minutes to go, but Harly Hosty saved the day with two goals in the span. Steve Polimeni and Kevin Korb scored the first two goals in the great win against the Rebels. Mepham is now 6-5-0 in Conference AA-III, just five points before first-place Elmont.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Girls Soccer: Clarke remained undefeated after a scoreless tie at Wantagh on Friday. Despite the offense, the Lady Rams have a chance at a first round bye in the playoffs with a current 8-0-3 record. They are tied with Island Trees in Conference A-II  21 points each in league play. 

East Meadow

Girls Volleyball: East Meadow defeated Syosset on the road in four hard-fought sets on Friday: 25-18, 22-2525-23 and 25-22. The Lady Jets move to 6-4 on the season in Conference AA-I due to 27 assists from Becky Syers and 18 kills from Jennifer Gundrum.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Girls Soccer: Hewlett battled with Valley Stream South at home, but no goals were put up on the scoreboard, as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The game had to be shortened during the second half because of inclement weather. Hewlett defeated Valley Stream South 2-1 in the first meeting, but its recent tie moves the team to 3-3-4.

Lawrence

Girls Soccer: Lawrence will host Five Towns rival Hewlett on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Golden Tornadoes are currently 4-6-1 in Conference V this season.

GARDEN CITY

Boys Volleyball: Garden City dropped a road match to Valley Stream South in four sets, 25-13, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-17. Doug Donnelly and Matt Packman led the team in the effort as the Trojans fall to 1-8 in Conference V.

Field Hockey: Garden City shut out its seventh opponent in a row, with the latest win coming on Friday against Cold Spring Harbor, 5-0. Charlotte Castronovo and Alexandro Bruno, who was named All-State in 2010, both scored twice, and Catherine McTiernan scored once. The Lady Trojans advance to 9-0-1 in Conference I this season.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Girls Soccer: The undefeated Lady Dragons, at 9-0-1 in Conference A-I, will try to improve their record in a road match on Monday at Seaford. 

Island Trees

Girls Soccer: The Lady Dawgs put up a trio of first half goals at Floral Park, and the surge proved to be enough as the team won 3-0. Allison Merrill, Bridget Vilbig and Kristen Duthie all found the back of the net for Island Trees, which is in first place in Conference A-II at 11-1-0. Brianna Ferrara recorded four saves in the shutout.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Dawgs tussled back and forth in a home match against Valley Stream North, winning in five sets: 28-26, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-23. Shamar Sanchez has an exceptional game with 21 kills. Alannah Basile led the defense with seven blocks, but also added 13 kills on the offensive end. Island Trees is now 8-2 in Conference BC-II this season.

MacArthur

Girls Volleyball: MacArthur defeated visiting Freeport in four sets on Friday: 25-11, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-21. Lauryn Stillman and Shannon O’Mara led the way for the Lady Generals to remain undefeated and in first place in Conference AA-II.

LONG BEACH

Girls Soccer: The Lady Marines tied Plainview JFK on the road, 2-2, behind a pair of goals from Shannon Horgan. Long Beach is in contention for a playoff spot late in the season at 3-5-2.

Boys Volleyball: Long Beach hung in tough with Port Washington on Friday, but fell in four sets: 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-22. Andrew Still and the Marines are currently tied in fourth place in Conference I at 6-4 overall.

LYNBROOK

Boys Soccer: The Owls will host Malverne/East Rockaway under the lights at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Lynbrook is currently 2-6-2 on the season in Conference VI.

MALVERNE

Girls Soccer: Malverne/East Rockaway defeated Roosevelt at home, 3-0, on Friday. Karina Alvarado led the way on offense with two goals, with Jaelyn Chincilla added one, all in the first half. The defense allowed just two shots to get through on goal in an exceptional effort to help the team advance to 6-3-0 on the season.

Girls Volleyball: Malverne completed a dominating sweep against Roosevelt, 25-8, 25-11 and 25-0. The third set sweep set the mark on the win, as Richelle Cardoza was the lone server in the set. Malverne moves to 8-2 in Conference BC-II with its fourth consecutive win. 

MERRICK

Boys Badminton: The Colts defeated visiting Hempstead on Friday by a 6-1 final. Eric Ravens and Tas Choudhury led the way in the win as Calhoun advances to 3-6 on the season.

MINEOLA

Girls Soccer: The Lady Mustangs fell on the road to Jericho by a 3-1 score on Friday afternoon. Mineola scored one in the first half, but Jericho scored a pair of goals in the next half to pull away. The team is now 2-7-3 overall this season in Conference A-III.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Girls Swimming: South Side defeated Syosset in a road meet on Friday afternoon by a 102-84 final score. Rachel Marasco led the way with wins in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200 Individual Medley. Catherine Kilgallen picked up a victory in the 500-yard freestyle to help the Lady Cyclone win for the first time this season.

Boys Golf: South Side has been one of the top teams this season, playing out of Conference V. The Cyclones are contending for a division title in 2011, with a match against Lawrence standing as the final test to do so. The team has swept the Golden Tornadoes twice this season by a 9-0 final. Exceptional players on this years’ team include Sean Byrne, Alex Matos, Chris a, Casey Cameron and seventh-grader Ryan McCarthy.

SEAFORD

Girls Volleyball: Seaford continued its perfect season  with a clean sweep of West Hempstead at home: 25-14, 25-13 and 25-12. Meaghan Curley led the offense with 17 assists for the Lady Vikings, who are now 10-0 in Conference BC-I

WANTAGH 

Girls Soccer: Wantagh played through to a scoreless tie at home against Clarke on Friday. Brenna Smith had eight saves in the shutout as the Lady Warriors move to 5-2-3 and in third place in Conference A-II.

Boys Volleyball: Wantagh was swept by a tough Plainedge team on the road, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18. Plainedge is in first place while the Warriors are still in search for a league win in Conference VI.

Girls Swimming: Wantagh Swimming edged out Farmingdale on the road by a final score of 56-46. The highlight of the meet was a school record-breaking diving performance by Victoria Zozzaro, who helped Wantagh move to 7-0 on the season.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Boys Soccer: West Hempstead lost at home to Valley Stream South by way of a first half goal from Flynn Shanahan. The Rams shot just four attempts on goal against a tough opposing defensive back line. West Hempstead is currently tied in first place in Conference VI with a 5-5-1 overall record.

Girls Soccer: West Hempstead made a valiant attempt at a comeback against Manhasset, but fell by a 3-2 final. The Lady Rams scored two late second half goals – both by Olivia Czavar- after trailing 3-0 after the first 60 minutes. West Hempstead drops its record to 3-5-2.

Girls Volleyball: West Hempstead dropped a tough match to first place and undefeated Seaford on Friday. The Lady Rams drop to 3-7 in Conference BC-I with just four matches left in the regular season.
