Daily Sports Digest: Oct. 15 — Weekend Football, Soccer Results

An interactive, daily digest of scores from schools in the Town of Hempstead and a place for you to add information and images for all youth sports.

BELLMORE

Kennedy 

Football: Kennedy has turned its season around with its third straight win, the latest coming by way of a 14-0 shutout at Westbury. It is the first time the program has won that many games in a row since an undefeated season in 1973. Matt Delbianco led the way with 122 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Chris Racalbuto threw for 133 yards and ran for a touchdown as well. Kennedy (3-3) will look to continue its streak at Herricks on Friday night.

Boys Soccer: Kennedy dropped a tough 3-0 game to Carey at home over the weekend. Zach Haefling stopped seven shots as the three Seahawk goals came in the second half. The Cougars fall to 2-8-0 in Conference III this season.

Mepham

Football: Mepham lost a game on the road to Elmont by just a five-point margin, 28-23. After falling behind 22-0, the Pirates scored 20 unanswered points, but the Spartans held on for a solid win. Dylan Gordon, Kyle Berlin and Nick Wenthen all found the end zone for Mepham, which falls to 4-2 on the season. 

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Field Hockey: In one of the top field hockey matchups of the season, Clarke (8-0-3) will host Garden City (9-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Both teams are undefeated this season and are ranked 1-2 in Conference I.

East Meadow

Football: East Meadow remained undefeated on the season with a 20-7 win against visiting Baldwin. The Jets (6-0) didn’t have as explosive of an offensive day, but were still able to control the clock and score when necessary to take the win. Quarterback Dylan Curry ran for two touchdowns and running back Robbie Healy ran for 153 yards on the day. John Posillico led the defense with 13 tackles against the Bruins.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett 

Football: Hewlett fought tough against first place Bethpage, but fell by a 22-14 score at home. Sam Martorella scored on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Zach Richman and later scored on a 76-yard kickoff return. The Bulldogs (3-3) have lost their last two games and will travel to Manhasset next weekend in an attempt to snap the skid.

Lawrence

Football: Lawrence won easily at Floral Park by a 35-7 score to improve its record to 5-1 on the season. Ryan, Tyler and Jordan Fredericks provided the bulk of the offense on the day with a combined six receptions for 127 yards and 31 carries for 273 yards, with Ryan running for three scores and catching another. Jordan opened up the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Joey Capobianco. Kenny Perez led the defense with 12 key tackles.

GARDEN CITY

Football: Garden City continued its dominance last weekend with a 34-3 win over visiting Calhoun. Devin Dwyer caught two touchdown passes in the first half for the Trojans (6-0). Running back Mark Ellis and Eddie Blatz each added touchdowns as well. Ryan Norton made a pair of field goals, including a career long 49-yarder, to help set a new school record with 12 career field goals made.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Football: Division struggled to keep up with the high-powered offense of Plainedge, losing 42-7 to drop to 4-2 on the season. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak as Joe Vanasco and the Blue Dragons offense experienced a tough time against the Red Devils. Jake Smithwick scored the only points off of a 45-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Cardno. They will attempt to redeem the loss next weekend at Valley Stream South. 

Island Trees

Boys Soccer: Island Trees defeated Mineola for the second time this season, with the latest coming by way of a 1-0 final score at home. Anthony Leonick scored in the 60th minute for the Bulldogs and Andrew Barbine stopped five shots in the shutout. Island Trees is now 10-0-2 and in first place in Conference VII.

MacArthur

Football: MacArthur edged out Hicksville on the road this past weekend, 20-11, with the help of a third quarter that allowed the Generals (5-1) to build a 20-3 lead. The win was the team's fifth straight of the season. Brett Ellers was the standout on offense with 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns, as well as on defense with a key interception. Ryan Scarano scored the third MacArthur touchdown of the game.

Boys Soccer: MacArthur dropped a close one to visiting Port Washington over the weekend by a 1-0 final. This game featured minimal offensive opportunities for both sides in a very strong defensive showing. MacArthur drops to 0-8-1 on the season.

LONG BEACH

Football: Long Beach fell in a close game at home against Carey, 19-14, to fall to an even 3-3 on the season. Quarterback Tom Rowley threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Chris Parler and also ran for a one-yard score, both in the fourth quarter as the Marines made a late attempt at a comeback. Long Beach will try to stay in the playoff race with a road game at Mepham next weekend. This game can be seen on Optimum channel 14, hosted by MSG Varsity, on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

LYNBROOK

Football: Lynbrook defeated a gritty Sewanhaka team at home by a 28-14 final to improve its record to 5-1 on the season. Matt Trotta, who is a top defender for the Owls, scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter after the game was tied at 14-14 at halftime. Trotta also had 11 tackles, while Duscy Mashculi added 12 tackles. Rocco Scibelli led the offense with 147 yards rushing and two scores and Luke Spitzer had a 43-yard touchdown run.

Girls Soccer: Lynbrook defeated Malverne/East Rockaway over the weekend by a 3-0 score. Chani Sebazco led the way for the Lady Owls with two goals and Sami Greenberg added a goal, as well as an assist. Michelle Cantanno stopped five shots in the shutout for Lynbrook, which is now in fourth place in Conference A-III.

MALVERNE

Football: Malverne and Cold Spring Harbor did not put up much offense in a weekend matchup, with Malverne (1-4) falling by a 7-6 final score. Malique Merchant ran for a 34-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but a Cold Spring Harbor touchdown with just less than five minutes left in the game put the team ahead for good.

MERRICK

Football: Calhoun had a tall task at Garden City, losing 34-3 to fall to 2-4 on the season. Julian Lee led the way on offense for the Colts with 80 yards on the ground. Thomas Murphy added a late field goal for the lone points on the day. Calhoun will try to end its three-game skid next weekend at home against Great Neck South.

Boys Soccer: Calhoun lost by a 1-0 margin in a Saturday road matchup against Plainview JFK. The lone goal came off of a penalty kick with just a minute remaining in the game. Matt Donnelly saved four shots and Harry Davis, Angelo DiMatteo and Justin Bergman led a strong effort against the Conference's top team. Calhoun is now 6-4-1 on the season.

MINEOLA

Football: Mineola defeated visiting Seaford in an exciting overtime game on Friday night, 28-21. The Mustangs (2-3) tied the game with 12 seconds remaining when quarterback Rob Clarkin threw a five-yard touchdown to Tom Breslin, who is also the team kicker. In overtime, Clarkin threw his second touchdown pass to Craig Weber for the dramatic win. Steven Napolitano contributed on offense with 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Boys Soccer: Mineola did not gain any ground on first place Island Trees on Saturday as the Mustangs fell by a 1-0 score. Kevin Mulder had five saves and the defense, led by Daniel Muller and Richie Forte, played an exceptional game against the Bulldogs. Mineola is now 8-2-1 and comfortably in second place in Conference VII.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Football: South Side was defeated by visiting Manhasset over the weekend with a 28-8 loss. The Cyclones (1-5) had a tough time moving the ball on offense in the first half, as Manhasset jumped out to an early 21-0 lead. The defense came up big with an interception return for a touchdown and a safety in the second half for the team's lone points of the game. 

SEAFORD

Football: Seaford has experienced an interesting season, the latest story coming by way of a 28-21 overtime loss at Mineola on Friday night. Seaford (3-3) gave up a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter, resulting in the eventual loss. Joe Richards was a force on offense for the Vikings with touchdown runs of 40, 1 and 1. Seaford will take on Roosevelt at home this Friday night.

WANTAGH

Football: Wantagh cruised by New Hyde Park on the road, 35-8, the team's highest point total this season. The Warriors (5-1) were led on offense by Joe Giardina with 122 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Matt Balzano scored the first two touchdowns to help Wantagh jump out to a 21-0 lead. Joe Brasile, who had a fumble return for a score, and Billy Fitzpatrick led the defense, which allowed just three total first downs in the dominating win. 

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Football: West Hempstead fell on the road to undefeated Locust Valley by a 25-6 score over the weekend. The loss was the Rams’ first of the season as they drop to 5-1. Michael Petrizzo scored a late touchdown with Locust Valley already ahead by 25 points. West Hempstead will try to rebound at home against Mineola next weekend.
