Girls Volleyball: Mepham traveled to the North Shore to take on Glen Cove Wednesday afternoon, but fell in three sets to the Big Red. The Lady Pirates kept it close during the entire match as each set was decided by five points or less. Kelcey Taylor and Jessica Montesserato led in the effort, but Mepham drops to 5-9 on the season with two home matches to go.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Boys Volleyball: Clarke defeated visiting Wantagh in a great five-set match on Wednesday to remain undefeated in Conference VI. The two sides went back and forth trading set wins, until the Rams won the decisive set, 25-15. Eltan Sheena led the way on offense with 14 kills and contributed 10 digs as well. Brandon Aran added 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs on defense in the big win.

East Meadow

Boys Volleyball: The Jets lost the opening set to Great Neck South on Wednesday, but surged back to claim the next three for the win. The key in the match for East Meadow was its exceptional defense at the net, led by Ebenezer Obiem with 11 blocks and Dennis Caranante with eight blocks. The pair also combined for 15 kills in the win that moves the team to 2-10 on the season.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Girls Volleyball: Hewlett defeated a tough Plainedge team on the road on Wednesday in a five-set match. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Red Devils traded sets until the road team won the decisive set, 25-16. Vanessa Collins controlled the pace on offense with 17 assists, and Lacey Jaffe and Samantha DiSalvo combined for 13 kills in the big win. Hewlett is 10-4 and in second place behind 13-0 Lynbrook, who they will meet at home on Friday.

Lawrence

Girls Volleyball: Lawrence swept Elmont on the road for its second win in a row by a score of 25-10, 25-23 and 26-24. Michelle Vainblat has been a top offensive player all year as she contributed with a team-high 14 kills and four aces. Alexis Quiroz added nine kills as well. Natalie Leger and Alex Tse also displayed solid effort to help the Golden Tornadoes move to 10-4 in Conference A-III.

GARDEN CITY

Boys Soccer: Garden City rebounded from a loss to Jericho last week with a solid win against third place Roslyn at home, 2-0. Sean Bingham scored a goal off of a pass from Chris Skorr to lead the Trojans, who are currently in first place in Conference IV at 8-2-2. They will wrap up their regular season at New Hyde Park on Friday before the playoffs.

Girls Soccer: Garden City tied first place Division on Wednesday, 1-1, to remain undefeated in its last five games (3-0-2) and improve to 5-2-5 overall. The Lady Trojans lost to this same team the first time around by a 3-0 score, so their most recent result looks to be very encouraging. Christina Mangels gave Garden City the lead in the first half until Division tied it up with 30 minutes to go. Tracy Rendano had a season-high 13 saves in the game.

Girls Volleyball: Garden City had a tall task against defending Long Island champion Wantagh on Wednesday. The Lady Trojans lost in three sets to fall to 5-8 in Conference A-I. Jackie Jahelka, Noelle Byrne and Emily LaCourte led a solid effort on the day, but the girls must look to another road game at Herricks on Friday.

Field Hockey: Garden City followed up a gritty 2-1 win against Clarke on Monday with an 8-0 win at Great Neck North to move to 11-0-1 on the season. The Lady Trojans makes scoring eight or more goals -- a task somewhat uncommon in field hockey -- look easy. The girls have reached that point four times so far, as they have outscored opponents 60-3 this season. Melanie McHugh led the offense with two goals, as six other players posted goals as well.

LEVITTOWN

Boys Volleyball: Levittown District swept aside Hempstead on Wednesday, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-12. The win was the team's fifth sweep of the season as Levittown improves to 6-4 in Conference III. Frank Ziegler and Anthony Costales led a dominating offensive performance with 15 kills each. John Sclar didn’t let much through on defense with 15 digs in the win.

Division

Boys Soccer: Division won its fifth consecutive game with a 2-1 victory over visiting Glen Cove. Shane McLaughlin, who seems to find a way to score nearly every time out, scored both goals on the day to increase his season total to a team-high 18 goals. Nick Lebright had seven saves in goal to aid in the win. The teams holds a comfortable first place lead over Hewlett in Conference V with just two games remaining before the playoffs.

Girls Soccer: Division tied Garden City on the road, 1-1, just the second time the team did not win this season. The Lady Trojans scored in the first half and led until Krista Fitzpatrick put in a goal off of a corner kick in the 51st minute. Division is 10-0-2 and leads South Side in Conference A-I, whom the girls play in the regular season finale on Oct. 24 at home.

Island Trees

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Dawgs will travel to Malverne on Thursday afternoon for a match scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

MacArthur

Girls Soccer: MacArthur cruised by Hicksville on the road by a 4-0 score, its fifth consecutive win. Jen Cozza needed just two saves to record the shutout thanks largely in part to a successful defensive effort from the Lady Generals. The team scored three goals in the first half to decide the game early on. Katie Gerdes and Arianna Montefusco led the offense with a goal and an assist each, as MacArthur (10-2-0) is neck and neck with Farmingdale in Conference AA-I.

LONG BEACH

Girls Soccer: Long Beach fell to Kennedy for the second time this season, the most recent coming at home by way of a 3-0 loss on Wednesday. Despite 14 saves from Cathryna Hughes, the Lady Cougars pulled away in the second half after the Lady Marines kept it close for much of the way. The team is now 3-7-2 with two games to go in the regular season.

Boys Volleyball: Long Beach swept Calhoun on the road on Wednesday -- 25-9, 25-11 and 25-10 -- in one of its most impressive performances thus far. The Marines have won two matches this week after falling in the finals of the Plainview Boys Volley Invitational last weekend. Andrew Still, who was named to the All-Tournament team at Plainview, led in the most recent victory with 10 kills and six blocks on defense. Josh Ayzenberg added eight digs on defense to help Long Beach improve to 8-5 on the season.

Girls Volleyball: Long Beach had its struggles this season on the court, most recently falling to visiting Kennedy in four sets. Katherine Meyers, Patricia Murphy and company urged the team on for a win in the second set, but the Lady Marines were outscored by a combined score of 50-29 in the final two frames. Long Beach is now 3-9 on the season in Conference A-I.

LYNBROOK

Girls Volleyball: Lynbrook remained undefeated on Wednesday, but it took five sets against Calhoun to do so. Lynbrook won the third set in dominating fashion, 25-6, but the Lady Colts came back to win the next set only for the Lady Owls to take the fifth and decisive set, 25-15. Sydney Sullivan led the way on both sides with 15 kills and 13 digs. Senior captain Kasey Keller added eight kills and five blocks. Lynbrook is now 13-0 in Conference A-II on the season.

Allison Glass and Emma Paris led the offense in the dominant win, but the important story was the Breast Cancer Awareness event currently happening with many of the girls volleyball teams in the county. The efforts raised $5,000 for research.

SEAFORD

Girls Soccer: The Lady Vikings will host Glen Cove on Thursday with a start time of 4:30 p.m.

Girls Volleyball: The undefeated Lady Vikings will host second place Mineola on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

WANTAGH

Boys Volleyball: Wantagh lost in a highly competitive five-set match at Clarke on Wednesday. Despite coming up short, the effort was a strong positive for a team that just won its first league match on Monday playing against an undefeated opponent. Christian Iannelli and the Warriors will move on the play Manhasset next Tuesday.

Girls Volleyball: Wantagh improved to a perfect 12-0 with a sweep over visiting Garden City, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.
