Daily Sports Digest: Sept. 26

An interactive, daily digest of scores from schools in the Town of Hempstead and a place for you to add information and images for all youth sports.

In addition to receiving regular updates from parents, coaches and schools, the Daily Sports Digest is designed for you to add your best photo and/or video to share (instructions here). BELLMORE

Kennedy

Boys Soccer: Just days after collecting their first win over Long Beach, the Cougars dropped a 1-0 decision at home to Westbury. Zach Haefling recorded 10 saves in net for the Cougars.

Girls Soccer: Kennedy defeated Long Beach 2-0 on Monday and is now undefeated in its last four games (3-0-1). Krista Trinidad and Chelsea Simon each scored for the Lady Cougars and Nicole Liotta stopped nine shots for her third shutout this season.

Boys Volleyball: Kennedy looked dominant in a clean sweep of Hewlett on the road, including allowing just eight points in the third and decisive game. Steve Gassert and Ben Canarick combined for 15 kills and six blocks.

Mepham

Girls Soccer: Mepham defeated East Meadow at home by a 2-1 score. Gabby Weiner and Erin Gilroy, who is just an eighth-grader, scored for the Lady Pirates, with the game-winner coming with seven minutes to go from Gilroy. Ashley Appel added two assists. 

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Boys Volleyball: Clarke maintained an undefeated conference record with a four-set victory over visiting Plainedge. Tyler Mengel led the way with 12 kills and three blocks followed by Mike Buttgereit with 10 more kills. 

Girls Volleyball: Clarke fell for the second time in a row, this time to Mineola in straight sets. The Lady Rams fall below .500 this season with a 2-3 record.

Girls Tennis: Sarah Minischetti earned a tough win in three sets to help Clarke defeat Wantagh 5-2 at home.

East Meadow

Boys Soccer: East Meadow defeated MacArthur by a 3-0 score on Monday. William Rosales scored a hat trick in the final 17 minutes off of three assists from Danny Espinoza to help the Jets take down the Generals at home.

Girls Soccer: East Meadow dropped its second game in a row, this time a 2-1 loss to Mepham. Toula De Leon scored her second goal of the season for the Lady Jets.

Girls Tennis: East Meadow swept Farmingdale, collecting all seven points on the day. Stephanie Illene won in straight sets at first singles for the Lady Jets.

Field Hockey: East Meadow dropped a close 1-0 game to Baldwin with the lone goal coming with just 12 minutes remaining. Kelly Ann Callahan stopped eight shots for the Jets.

FIVE TOWNS 

Hewlett

Boys Volleyball: The Bulldogs fell in straight sets at home against Kennedy. Hewlett is still searching for its first victory on the season.

Girls Tennis: The Lady Bulldogs fought tough against visiting Manhasset, but fell by a 7-0 score on Monday afternoon.

Lawrence 

Girls Soccer: Lawrence tied Great Neck South at home with the game ending with no goals on the scoreboard. Nicole Robinson was the top player for the Golden Tornadoes with 13 saves in net.

GARDEN CITY

Girls Soccer: Garden City couldn’t get past undefeated Division on Monday, falling 3-0. Kelsey Tierney stopped eight of the 11 shots on goal for the Lady Trojans in the loss.

Girls Swimming: The Lady Trojans defeated Jericho in a meet on Monday by a score of 102-67. Lindsay Schlichte earned a winning time in the 500-yard freestyle event that earned her a qualifying spot in the state tournament.

MALVERNE 

Boys Soccer: Malverne/East Rockaway had a tough time at Valley Stream South on Monday, dropping a 5-1 game. John Amaya scored the lone goal in the losing effort.

Girls Volleyball: Malverne defeated Locust Valley in straight sets on Monday to advance to 3-1 on the season.

Girls Tennis: Malverne/East Rockaway took on undefeated Valley Stream Central, but fell by a 5-2 score.

MERRICK 

Boys Soccer: Calhoun dropped a road game to Hickville by a 3-1 score. Justin Bergman scored the lone goal for the Colts and Matthew Donnelly had 10 total saves in the losing effort.

Girls Soccer: Calhoun tied for the second straight game, this time drawing 2-2 on the road against Herricks. Michelle Iacono scored in the first minute on an assist from Kristina Gandolfo, who scored the second goal off of an Iacono pass, but Herricks tied the score again in the second half.

Girls Tennis: The Lady Colts couldn’t get past Baldwin on Monday, dropping the match by a 5-2 score.

MINEOLA

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Mustangs swept aside visiting Clarke for their third straight set victory of the season. Mineola is now 4-2.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Girls Soccer: Division shut out Garden City by a 3-0 score to remain undefeated on the season at 6-0-0. Krista Fitzpatrick and Joanna Capitelli each had a goal and an assist. Fitzpatrick has now totaled three goals and 10 assists in six games.

Girls Tennis: Division topped Uniondale, 4-3, on Monday afternoon. Rebecca Solivan won in third singles for the decisive point of the match.

Island Trees

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Dawgs fell to a 4-2 record with a loss at North Shore. The match went five sets with each being decided by four points or less. Island Trees has lost their last two matches after starting the season with four consecutive wins.

MacArthur

Boys Soccer: MacArthur remained tied with East Meadow for more than 60 minutes, but the Jets came out on top with three goals in the final 17 minutes to win 3-0 over the Generals. Kevin Mayer stopped six shots in the loss.

Girls Soccer: The Lady Generals were coming off of a big win over defending state champ Massapequa on Saturday. They followed with a 3-0 win at home over Hicksville. Jill Mulholland led the way with two goals and Arianna Montefusco scored one.

Girls Volleyball: MacArthur defeated Plainview JFK in four sets to remain undefeated at 6-0. The Lady Generals dropped the opening set, but came back to win behind Kristen Brown, who had 10 kills, and Lauryn Stillman, who had 24 assists.

Girls Tennis: MacArthur struggled against visiting Lynbrook on Monday, dropping the match by a 6-1 score to the Lady Owls.

Girls Cross County: MacArthur finished in third in a quad meet hosted at Massapequa on Monday, finishing with 43 team points.

LONG BEACH 

Girls Soccer: Long Beach fell to a 3-2-0 record this season with a 2-0 loss to Kennedy on Monday. Cathryna Hughes stopped 11 shots but it was not enough for the Lady Marines to get the win.

LYNBROOK 

Boys Soccer: Lynbrook picked up its first win on the season with a 1-0 win over Manhasset on Monday. Patrick Doody scored midway through the first half and Evan Foley recorded his first shutout of the season in net. The Owls are 1-3-2.

Girls Swimming: The Lady Owls traveled to Hicksville and collected a 96-69 win to remain undefeated at 4-0 in meets this season.

Girls Tennis: Lynbrook has been one of the more dominant teams on the court in recent years. Monday was no different, as the girls picked up a 6-1 win at MacArthur.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE 

Girls Soccer: South Side continued to roll on Monday with a 3-1 win over New Hyde Park to improve to 5-0-1 on the season. Christina Klaum, Kayla Hostodka and Victoria Reis each scored. NHP’s goalkeeper, Codi-Erin Fletcher managed 20 saves against a dominant Cyclone offense.

Girls Tennis: South Side came up on the losing end of a 4-3 loss to Carey. Felicia DeMarco fought tough in a three-set match, but fell short of the decisive fourth point.

SEAFORD

Girls Soccer: Seaford was shutout by Plainedge by a 3-0 score. The Lady Vikings, who suffered key injuries in the preseason, are still in search of their first win at 0-5-1. 

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Vikings remained undefeated (5-0) this season with a sweep of East Rockaway. The team allowed just 37 combined points in the three sets on Monday.

WANTAGH

Girls Tennis: Wantagh visited Clarke on Monday, but could not pull out the victory as the team fell for the second time this season.

Girls Swimming: Wantagh defeated Hewlett 62-40 to improve to 2-0 this season. Shannon Gordon led the Lady Warriors with wins in the 200-yard and 100 freestyle.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Girls Volleyball: West Hempstead won for the third time in just a week, with their latest win coming by way of a sweep over visiting Wheatley. The Lady Rams are now 3-1 on the season.

Girls Tennis: West Hempstead lost 6-1 to a tough Bethpage team on Monday. The Golden Eagles remain undefeated in their conference this season.
