Daily Sports Digest: Sept. 28 - Top Games Edition

An interactive, daily digest of scores from schools in the Town of Hempstead and a place for you to add information and images for all youth sports.

In addition to receiving regular updates from parents, coaches and schools, the Daily Sports Digest is designed for you to add your best photo and/or video to share (instructions here). This is a list of some of the top athletic performances by each respective school in the Town of Hempstead so far in the 2011 fall season. If you have suggestions for other top games or individual performances, let us know!

BELLMORE

Kennedy

Boys Soccer: Kennedy 2 @ Long Beach 1

Kennedy completed a dramatic comeback victory on the road against Long Beach. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Eric Friedlander found an answer with a goal for the Cougars in the 70th minute. The boys weren’t done though, as nine minutes later, Chris Fuschillo took a pass from Friedlander and scored the go-ahead goal to cap the score at 2-1 for the team's first win of the young season.

Mepham

Football: Mepham 14 @ Carey 7

With a perfect 3-0 record and a current first place standing in Conference II, Mepham had to fight to the final whistle for their W’s. On Sept. 17, Mepham took on Carey on the road, the same team that eliminated them from the 2010 playoffs. With the score tied at 7-7 in the fourth quarter, quarterback A.J. Heller found receiver Dylan Gordon for a 39-yard touchdown to lead 14-7, which was enough for the huge upset victory over top-ranked Carey.

EAST MEADOW 

Clarke

Football: Island Trees 20 @ Clarke 27

Clarke met with Island Trees at home on Sept. 24 in search of its first win of the season. After falling behind by seven points at 20-13 after three quarters, the Rams went on a long drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mike Martiello. Down 20-19, Martiello threw a pass to Andrew Eannucci for a 15-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining to go ahead 27-20 for the eventual win.

East Meadow

Boys Soccer: Calhoun 1 @ East Meadow 2

Both of these teams are very talented and should contend for a Conference II title. On Sept. 20, the two sides met in East Meadow, where the Jets’ William Rosales scored his second goal with just two minutes remaining for the team's first conference win of the season.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Girls Volleyball: New Hyde Park 2 @ Hewlett 3

The Lady Bulldogs opened up their season on Sept. 9 with a five-set victory over New Hyde Park. After dropping two of the first three sets, Hewlett won the next two, 25-13 and 25-10 to win it. Sam DiSalvo led with 15 kills and Vanessa Collins added 26 assists.

Lawrence

Girls Volleyball: Mepham 2 @ Lawrence 3

Lawrence, who finished 12-2 in 2010, is off to an undefeated 7-0 start. On Sept. 27, the Golden Tornadoes went back and forth with visiting Mepham to eventually win in five sets in easily their most exciting match thus far. Natalie Leger had 18 kills, followed by Michelle Vainblat with 16. Alex Tse had 47 assists to help top the Lady Pirates. 

GARDEN CITY

Field Hockey: Massapequa 0 @ Garden City 1

By nearly winning a state title last season, the Lady Trojans were set up as the "hunted" this season. Victoria Piscopo scored the team's first goal of the year in the season opener against a tough Massapequa team, also a Nassau County champion from 2010.

MALVERNE

Girls Soccer: Malverne/East Rockaway 6 @ Roosevelt 0

The girls soccer club showed what it was all about in a Sept. 22 road game at Roosevelt. Karina Alvardo and Taylor McGinn put in two goals in the team's most dominating performance to date.

MERRICK

Boys Soccer: Valley Stream Central 1 @ Calhoun 2

On Sept. 16, Calhoun scored a first half goal against VSC, but eventually let up the lead late in the second half. The Colts pulled ahead with just four minutes remaining by way of the "Cassisi Connection." Vito Cassisi sent in a perfect cross to his brother Joe for the game winner. 

MINEOLA

Boys Soccer: Oceanside 0 @ Mineola 2

Mineola captured the Mustang Cup championship over Lynbrook on Sept. 10. Daniel Pardo scored the eventual game winner late in the second half. Paul Sandoval assisted on both of the team's goals in the win. 

LEVITTOWN 

Division

Girls Soccer: Division 3 @ New Hyde Park 1

Division is a perfect 6-0-0 this season and it all started with a road win at NHP. Tied at 1-1 at the half, Susan Ballantyne broke the tie with the team's second goal. Division has outscored opponents 20-2 this season. 

Island Trees

Boys Soccer: Island Trees 4 @ Mineola 1

J.T. Famularo scored all four for the Bulldogs in a tough road game against Mineola. The two teams are 1-2 in the conference and figure to compete for the title. Island Trees is undefeated and handed Mineola its first loss during this Sept. 23 matchup.

MacArthur

Girls Soccer: MacArthur 1 @ Massapequa 0

The Lady Generals defeated the defending state champions on the road on Sept. 24 behind a goal from Arianna Montefusco. The win is part of a current three-game winning streak for MacArthur.

LONG BEACH

Girls Volleyball: Long Beach 3 @ Roslyn 2

On Sept. 16, down 2-1 in sets and on the road, the Lady Marines battled back to win the final two games, both by a 25-17 score. Jackie Zeppa led the way with 12 kills and Dakota O’Neill added 19 digs to aid in the comeback win. 

LYNBROOK

Girls Volleyball: Lynbrook 3 @ Plainedge 2

Lynbrook is currently 8-0 after winning just two total matches in 2010. The closest victory came on the road on Sept. 14 at Plainedge. After giving up a 2-0 lead, the Lady Owls clinched the match with a 25-15 win in the fifth set. Kasey Keller and Sydney Sullivan combined for 22 kills. 

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Girls Volleyball: South Side 2 @ Long Beach 1

The Lady Cyclones won the Baldwin Girls Volleyball Invitational on Sept. 24 over Long Beach. The girls dropped the first game but came back to win the next two, 25-23 and 15-4 in the special tournament format. Allison Glass collected 23 total kills in the tournament.

SEAFORD

Field Hockey: Floral Park 0 @ Seaford 1

After a tough start to the season, the Lady Vikings got a critical win against Floral Park on Sept. 27 by a 1-0 score. Kara Murphy scored the lone goal of the game in the second half and Diana Rice had 10 saves in her first shutout of the season.

WANTAGH

Girls Soccer: Wantagh 4 @ Manhasset 2

Wantagh trailed 1-0 for the first 46 minutes on the road to Manhasset. After trading a goal each in the next 10 minutes, the Lady Warriors broke out for three consecutive goals in the final 20 minutes to pick up their biggest win of the season. Brenna Connolly scored two goals in the game.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Football: West Hempstead 28 @ Seaford 20

West Hempstead defeated defending county champion Seaford for the Rams' second win of the season on Sept. 17 on the road. Tayvon Hall rushed for 122 yards, a touchdown and added a key interception on the defensive side.
