Hot Bats, Pitching Propel Malverne to Win Over W.H.

Strong first inning powers Malverne Little League to 11-2 victory over West Hempstead.

The Malverne Junior Little League team got off to a hot start on Wednesday night, knocking in seven runs in the top of the first inning against West Hempstead.

The deficit proved to be too much for West Hempstead to overcome as they lost in the six inning game, 11-2.

"We had a good game today," said Malverne coach Brendan Crowe. "We got a lot of production out of our bats and some good pitching in. We played hard and played like a team today."

Malverne pitcher Andrew Crimi was outstanding, getting multiple strikeouts at key points in the game.

In the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and West Hempstead threatening, Crimi pulled through by striking out the final batter to save the inning.

And once again in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the bases loaded and nobody out, Crimi was able to get out of the jam with his strong arm.

He struck out the next batter and the Malverne infield was able to turn a double play to end the inning.

West Hempstead did get on the board though as Brian DeVito was able to score after stealing third base.

With the score 8-1 in the top of the fifth, West Hempstead sent in pitcher Hardvis Batista to replace Vinny DiGiovanni.

Batista was effective with his blazing fastball, but Malverne was able to tack on another run after a single by catcher Joe Ruscillo.

In the bottom of the fifth, Crimi was replaced by relief pitcher Matt Crowe.

West Hempstead had their last licks in the bottom of the sixth and was able to once again load the bases.

They knocked in another run off Crowe but it was minimal damage as Malverne went on to win the game, 11-2.
