'Ice Cold Bats' Lead To Loss For Lady Rams Softball

West Hempstead's offense struggles in 6-1 loss to Jericho.

It was a cold, windy day on Wednesday as the Lady Rams softball team traveled to play Jericho in an out of conference game. Unfortunately, West Hempstead's bats were even colder as the Lady Rams struggled to hit the ball past the Lady Jayhawks defense in a 6-1 defeat.

"We couldn't manufacture much of an offense today," said Coach Chris Van Kovics. "Our bats were ice cold."

The Lady Rams got their only run in the top of the second inning after an RBI single from Hannah VanRonk  scored Laura Boehm.

Boehm was able to get on base after hitting a single to centerfield.

This brought the score to 2-1 in favor of Jericho.

The Lady Jayhawks built on that lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the third, West Hempstead got on base after a double from Victoria Rodriguez, but the inning ended as she was called out at home after a heads up play by the Jayhawk infield.

Junior pitcher Paige Bettineschi was on the mound for her second day in a row.

She did the best she could to keep the Lady Jayhawk batters from getting on base and pitched a solid game overall.

"Our pitching was pretty good today," said Van Kovics. "And the defense was a little better than how we fared against Lynbrook, but there are still some weaknesses and we still need to work on getting the right people in the right spots."

He said that the team needs to help out the pitcher by getting some production on offense.

"It's definitely tough when you only score one run."

West Hempstead is now 0-2.
