Lady Owls Soar Past Lady Big Red

Lynbrook handily defeats Glen Cove to gain its first win of the season.

The Lady Owls defeated Glen Cove, 16-5, on Tuesday at .

Lynbrook established itself from the opening draw, won by center Carrie Feltkamp, which led to a goal by Julie Wigand just 47 seconds into the game. The Lady Owls held a lead for the rest of the game.

“We wanted to play an overall game. And we started from the defense. We wanted to make sure our defense played solid. And they did,” said Lady Owls coach Vincent Tetro.

Lynbrook's authority was not only demonstrated in overt ways such as goals-for and goals-against, but other more subtle measures like time of possession, ground balls recovered, and draws won.

It seemed a foregone conclusion that every time Feltkamp stepped in for the draw, she would win it, which is why her coach gave her the game ball.

“After wins, I give a game ball out and I gave it to my center, just for controlling the draw,” Tetro said. “She pushed the ball where she wanted it to go. She was getting ground balls. And she played a great overall game.”

And she had two goals, to boot.

In the second half, Lynbrook took possession immediately and kept it for the first five minutes. Glen Cove’s center, Cassandra Napoli, was finally able to take hold of the ball for the Lady Big Red just after the 20-minute mark to set up some offense for her team, leading to a shot that was ultimately stopped by goalie Sarah Chrywiski to preserve the 11-2 lead.

Soon after, Lynbrook right attack wing Kasey Carter cut across the arc, dodging defenders and took a shot on net. Glen Cove goalie Crissy Amplia made an agile save, but Nicole Pataky picked up the rebound and fired it into the net for her fourth goal with 16:43 left, putting the Lady Owls up 12-2 before they began resting their starters.

Pataky led the team with four goals, followed by Wigand with three, and Carter, Feltkamp, and left attack wing Marykate Regan each had two.

On Monday, the 1-1 Lady Owls will play their first conference game at New Hyde Park, home of the undefeated Lady Gladiators of New Hyde Park (2-0).
