Lynbrook High School Receives Award in 'Green Challenge'

The Globe Club helped raise recycling awareness significantly at the high school.

The Lynbrook High School Globe Club was recently awarded a certificate of merit in the Best Recycling Event category of the 2011-2012 Green Challenge.

The challenge, sponsored by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, serves to recognize schools that are working toward responsible solid waste management by developing waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting programs.

The Globe Club's project involved developing a campaign to raise awareness
about the importance of recycling. During the week of Feb. 13-17, volunteers weighed the garbage and recyclables accumulated in the school cafeteria during all four lunch periods.

With baseline statistics in hand, Globe Club members embarked on a week-long awareness campaign from Feb. 27 to March 2, sharing recycling facts during morning announcements, patrolling the cafeteria to remind students to recycle, and wearing "Varsity Recycling" shirts throughout the week to keep everyone thinking about their impact on the environment.

Their campaign achieved measurable results, decreasing the amount of garbage by 29 percent and increasing recycling by an impressive 80 percent.

In addition to the awareness campaign, Globe Club members have organized bottle cap, paper and ink cartridge recycling programs at their school. They also participated in a beach cleanup project at Bay Park in East Rockaway.
