Lynbrook Loses Close Game Versus Hewlett

Lady Owls drops to last place in the standings, but remain optimistic.

The Lynbrook Lady Owls softball team lost, 4-3, to Hewlett last night, dropping the team to last place in League 2 Conference III.

A bases-loaded walk gave the Owls (0-4) the early one-run lead in the second inning; however, the team’s small-ball approach wasn’t enough to hold on in the end. Hewlett improved to 1-5.

While the girls managed to come back with a game-tying triple from Bridget Greene in the top of the fifth inning, answering Hewlett’s Samara Yegelwel’s two-run home run, the Owls dropped to a 4–3 loss in bottom of the seventh after an attempted throw-down to third missed its target.

Owls head coach Peter Tuscano said he remained optimistic for his team’s future for the remainder of the season, although they will have to win the rest of their games for a chance at the playoffs this year, he said.

“I thought we played pretty well defensively up until that last inning, even though it just didn’t happen for us in the end there,” Tuscano said. “We just didn’t come up with that big hit.

“We got to keep trying, keep practicing, keep having fun and keep our morale up,” he added.

Although the team has been off to a slow start this year, one thing they can count on in the coming games is support from their fans.

While this was an away game for the girls, several parents managed to make it out to the game to cheer on their team.

Ginny Keller, secretary for 28 years at Hewlett High School, didn’t have to travel far to see her daughter Kasey Keller, first baseman for Lynbrook.

“I only see Hewlett when they’re playing Lynbrook,” Keller said with a smile on her face.

“I go to their away games too,” she added.

Lynbrook plays West Hempstead and Valley Stream North this week, both key games for the team’s future.
