Malverne Junior Baseball Loses After Late Rally

Franklin Square scores three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Malverne 3-2 in tournament.

Malverne's junior baseball team was cruising against Franklin Square in the third round of the tournament game at Floral Park field on Thursday but their opponent staged late comeback.

The Malverne Little League team had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to RBI by hitters Pat McGreevy and Taylor Figliozzi.

That all changed as Franklin Square rallied to score three late runs and snatch the victory away from Malverne.

"It was a tough game," said Malverne head coach Pete Figliozzi. "It was 0-0 through five innings when we got on board with two runs in the top of the fifth. They scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game and won it on a walk-off hit."

Pitcher Billy Meditz was fantastic through seven innings before he was replaced by relief pitcher Joe Ruscillo.

Ruscillo had his hands full with men on base and was not able to hold off the Franklin Square onslaught.

This was Malverne's first loss in the two-game elimination tournament.

The team will play again on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Whelan Field in Malverne.
