Mules Wallop Wildcats, Win Conference Championship

Andre Berry and Cory Alexander lead Malverne to victory in Conference B Championship.

Malverne proved why they are undefeated in their conference, winning the Class B Championship for the sixth consecutive year Thursday afternoon.

The Mules' varsity boys basketball walloped the Wheatley Wildcats, 69-49, in the conference final, to move onto the Long Island Championship.

The Wildcats put up a good fight against Malverne in the first quarter of the Feb. 24 game at Long Island University's C.W Post campus.

They were able to keep the Mules from getting easy looks at the basket and capitalized on their own offensive possessions.

The score was tied at 13 a piece to start the second quarter when Mules star point guard made his presence felt.

The do-everything senior, who has been clutch on so many occasions this season, hit a big 3-point shot to spark the Mules offense.

He than used his speed to get into the lane and hit a floater, getting fouled in the process.

"Cory has made such an impact for us this year," said Mules Assistant Coach Walt Askinoff. "He's always the one to get our offense going at the key moments."

Malverne scored 18 points in the second quarter and took a 31-23 lead into halftime.

In the second half of the game, the Mules blew the doors wide open, scoring 20 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth en route to a 69-49 victory.

Sophomore big man Andre Berry scored 16 of his career-high 24 points in the second half.

Freshman guard Marc Jean had an impressive third quarter with a big 3-point shot and some nice assists inside to Berry.

"It was a super performance from Berry tonight," said Askinoff. "He got some nice assists from the 5'7" tough guard Marc Jean and really made a difference inside for us."

Malverne will play in the Long Island Regionals, representing Nassau County at SUNY Old Westbury on March 9 at 8 p.m. They will play the winner of the Center Moriches-Mattituck game.
