Playoffs: Lynbrook Knocks Off Hewlett, 16-13

The Owls edged the Bulldogs at home in the opening round of the Class B playoffs.

The Lynbrook varsity girls lacrosse team continued its role as the newest Conference B-II champions with a 16-13 victory over Hewlett at home on Monday in the first round of the Class B playoffs.

The eighth-seeded Owls (12-2) were played closely by the ninth-seeded Bulldogs (9-6) for the extent of the game, but Lynbrook got the best of Hewlett for the second time this season.

Nicole Pataky has been a dominant player for Lynbrook down the stretch leading into the playoffs. She amassed 14 totals goals and four assists in the final two regular season games and the first-round match-up, leading the way with a game-high eight points, including six goals and two assists.

Kacey Carter followed in her footsteps with seven total points, including four goals and three assists. Julie Wigand and Adrienne Germanakos also put in two goals each for the Owls.

Hewlett has been led all year by Sam DiSalvo, who scored five goals as well as an assist for her team. Jenni Rogoff contributed with four goals and Val DeNapoli added three goals. DeNapoli has been one of the best in the county at winning faceoffs for her team, but despite that, Lynbrook was able to maintain enough possession and convert to tip the winning scale in its favor.

The Owls held onto a slim 11-10 lead at the half and stepped up its defense to hold the Bulldogs to just three second-half goals en route to the win.

Lynbrook has now won five consecutive games since its late April loss to Plainedge. The road ahead does not get any easier, as the Owls will square off with top-ranked Garden City in the second round on Friday. The Trojans (15-0 overall, 6-0 conference) cruised to a Conference B-I title in the regular season and has won nearly every game on their schedule in convincing fashion.

Lynbrook and Garden City will play in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m. at Garden City High School. Check back with the Nassau Boces Athletic site for all scheduling updates and brackets.
