Playoffs: Lynbrook Tops Glen Cove, 9-7

Owls advance to the third round; will take on third-seeded Island Trees.

Lynbrook took down Glen Cove on the road in the second round of the Class A Baseball playoffs on Monday afternoon. The 13-seeded Owls (13-8) topped the Big Red (14-7), 9-7, for their second win in three games over them this season.

Pitcher Danny Grossi picked up the win for Lynbrook, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out six in 5.1 innings. Spencer Kirsch came on in relief to finish off the final 1.2 innings and hold off a surging comeback by Glen Cove.

Lynbrook found all of the offense it needed in the middle three innings of the single-elimination match-up. In the third, the Owls put three runs on the board off of Glen Cove's Kevin Martinez to take the early lead

In the fourth, Alex Weingarten — known more for his stellar pitching this year — hit a two-run home run, followed by a solo home run by Bobby Negron. In the following inning, the Owls added three runs again, highlighted by a two-run home run from Andrew Marks to put his team ahead, 9-3.

With Grossi giving up a late run, Glen Cove tried to mount a last-ditch effort with Kirsch on the mound. But it was to no avail as Lynbrook held on for the 9-7 win and a trip to the next round.

Andrew Marks came through for the second playoff game in a row for Lynbrook. He went 4-for-5 with the two-run home run, two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs.

“Andrew [Marks] did a great job and has been coming through as of late as well as all of our guys in the playoffs,” Lynbrook head coach Al Marrazzo said. “We found the offense when we needed it to help Danny [Grossi] out to get the win.”

With 14-seeded Seaford taking down Clarke on Monday, Lynbrook avoided another series with top-ranked Plainedge in the next round, at least for now. The .

Lynbrook will instead play third-seeded Island Trees in a best-of-three series to start on May 18. Lynbrook lost its season opener to Island Trees at home, 8-3. Check back with the Nassau BOCES Athletics page for all scheduling updates and brackets.
