Rams Have Up and Down Week, Prepare for Valley Stream

West Hempstead's girls and boys varsity basketball lose to Floral Park but rebound to beat Glen Cove.

After losing last Tuesday to Floral Park, the Rams varsity boys and girls basketball squads were able to rebound in a big way. The two teams beat their opponents from Friday night.

Victories Over Glen Cove

The boys pulled off a clear victory against Glen Cove, 64-43, on Jan. 21. Tyree Glascoe led his team to the win with 18 points, six steals and five assists. Thomas Valerio also put up  13 points and Mike Mangino scored  five. Magino and Jan Carolos Brito were aggressive under the net with eight and 11 rebounds respectively. The win brings the boys record to 4-3 in their conference.

The Lady Rams' game against Glen Cove on Friday was a tight one, but it was won  off the fingers of guard Katie Lynch, who hit two free throws in the final seconds to give West Hempstead the 37-35 victory.

The whole team was steady from the free throw line going 17-22 compared to 6-16 for Glen Cove.

"We wanted to get them in foul trouble because we knew they weren't great from the free throw line," said Head Coach Chris Van Kovics. "I think we followed our blueprint of breaking their press and slowing the game down and Katie and Sarah (Njoku) stepped up for us."

The Lady Rams are now 2-5 in the conference and 3-9 overall.

Tuesday Night Belonged to Knights

Last Tuesday night belonged to both the boys and girls varsity Knights from Floral Park. It was a close match for the boys, but they ultimately fell to Floral Park, 69-56. Rams Kijana Rogers and Jan Carlos Brito both scored 12 points a piece, but it wasn't enough to defeat their top ranked opponent.

Lady Rams also lost a hard-fought game, 41-29, to a Floral Park team who is at the top of conference A-3.

The girls were able to stay with the Lady Knights through the third quarter of the Jan. 18 game, but hit a scoring drought in the fourth at a crucial period.

"It was a two point game going into the last quarter," said Van Kovics. "But we couldn't score in the fourth only hitting two of our shots. They had fourteen points and that was the difference."

Both varsity squads will take on Valley Stream South on Friday.
