Rams' New Coach Sees Much Potential in Ball Players

First year head coach William Cloghessy sees potential in his lineup

William Cloghessy sees much potential in his Rams.

The first year head coach of West Hempstead High Schools' varsity baseball team told Patch, "I've seen some good things from our players and like our chances to compete in the conference."

This season the Rams returned with four-year varsity starter and co-captain Jason Arasmo and junior shortstop Brandon Ruiz.

Senior first baseman/outfielder Tom Valerio is also back to give West Hempstead some much needed experience.

"Ruiz gives us some speed and will help to manufacture some runs," said Cloghessy. "He will be batting for us at the top of the order."

Arasmo will play at the catcher position and fill in on the mound when needed.

Big things are expected from sophomore pitcher Brandon Sherman.

"He came on this team as a freshman and we expect him to take a big step up this season," said Cloghessy.

Sherman will bat in the middle of the order along with sophomore Joe Palladino, who should provide a solid presence for the Rams.

"He's a strong bat, a real hard hitter," said Cloghessy.

The Rams are a young team with four sophomores and one freshman in their lineup, but they should benefit from a first year head coach looking to prove his worth and the veteran leadership of Arasmo, Valerio and Ruiz.

So far, the boys are 0-3 in the league, having suffered loses to Bethpage and Plainedge. They will look to get their first win on Monday when they travel to Plainedge High School to take on the Red Devils.
