Rams Surrender to Indians, Ladies Lost Without Captain

The Rams and Lady Rams have tough times against conference foe Manhasset

West Hempstead High School's boys and girls varsity basketball both had showdowns this week against the Manhasset Indians, but could not capture victories from their tough opponents.

The Lady Rams looked good for the first half against Manhasset Friday night. Unfortunately, they could not maintain their momentum into the second and lost to the Indians, 45-27.

West Hempstead's varsity girls got off to a strong start, taking a 10-5 lead in the first quarter thanks to good shooting from guards Sarah Njoku and Amanda Gabayan. Captain Katie Lynch kept the team together in the second quarter when Manhasset slowly began to cut into the lead. She was able to effectively ward off the Lady Indians' full court press and deliver the ball to her teammates down the floor.

At halftime the Lady Rams still held the lead 20-18.

That all changed midway through the third quarter when Lynch got tangled up with a Manhasset player during a fight for a loose ball. She got knocked to the floor and left the game with an unspecified injury. The Lady Rams were not the same team in her absence. They managed to score only seven points in the second half and had trouble even bringing the ball up the floor without turning it over.

Manhasset took full advantage, blowing the game open by scoring 27 second-half points to beat the Lady Rams, 45-27. The West Hempstead girls are now 3-11 (2-7) and will play conference headliner North Shore on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

BOYS BEAT NORTH SHORE, BUT FALL TO MANHASSET

The Rams varsity boys traveled to Manhasset on Friday, a day after beating North Shore in dominant fashion.

They kept the score close, being down only one point after the first quarter but could not stop the Indians' guards from heating up down the stretch, losing 72-62.

Tyree Glascoe was the leading scorer for the Rams with 18 points.Tom Valerio had three 3-pointers in the game, scoring a total 9 points.

The Rams boys team will next face Great Neck North on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

"It's a big game for us," said Coach Ed Cosgrove. "As it stands now we are both fighting for third place in the conference. It won't be an easy task for us to go and beat them, but we need to win the remaining games on our schedule."

After Great Neck, the Rams will travel to Floral Park on Feb. 11 and play a final home game against Glen Cove on Feb. 14.
