Runners Brave Heat to Race Through Hempstead Lake [Photos, Results]

The New York State Parks Summer Run Series comes to West Hempstead.

The start of a heat wave Monday didn't stop more than 1,200 runners from racing through Hempstead Lake State Park.

The 4K was part of the New York State Parks 2012 Summer Run Series, which gives runners of all levels a chance to race through some of the region's most scenic parks.

The race started promptly at 7 p.m. and the fastest runner, Shane Giannetti, 19, of Oyster Bay, sped through the finish line in just under 13 minutes. Giannetti completed the 2.5 mile course five seconds faster than the second place finisher, Michael Nehr, 32, of West Babylon, and 33 seconds before Andrew Miller, 23, of East Northport, who took third. The top female finisher was Stephanie Braun, 21, of Dix Hills, who finished in 14:12.
