BELLMORE

Kennedy

Boys Basketball: Kennedy hung in tough with defending Class AA champion Elmont on Tuesday, but fell by a 63-52 final score. Ralph Farella led the Cougars with 21 points, including three three-pointers, and Chad Fuschillo added 12 in the effort. Kennedy now stands at 0-3 on the season.

Girls Basketball: Kennedy defeated Elmont at home on Tuesday by a 41-27 final score. Melissa Coliccio led the Lady Cougars with 13 points and Sam Milazzo added 12 in the win. Heather Hulkower also added eight points and 12 rebounds in a strong effort. On Wednesday, Kennedy defeated Lawrence, 38-35, behind 16 points from Victoria Ferry. Samantha Milazzo, who had seven points, hit two free throws to put her team ahead 37-35 with eight seconds to go.

Bowling: The Bellmore-Merrick boys team swept MacArthur 3-0 on Monday. Tom Bianco rolled a game-high 279 in the middle set to go along with a 247 from Anthony Beidol. The team then defeated Levittown District after winning the decisive third game 801-702. Bianco rolled a game-high 256 in the middle set for the second match in a row. Bellmore-Merrick is a perfect 8-0 on the season.

Mepham

Boys Basketball: Mepham edged out Westbury at home on Tuesday by a 60-57 final to rebound from its first loss of the season last week. The Pirates overcame an early deficit after the first quarter to win. Kyle Wechsler scored a team-high 21 points, J.T. Elsasser added 12 and center Kris Waldron posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for 4-1 Mepham.

Girls Basketball: Mepham played its second conference game on Monday, defeating Westbury, 62-29. Leading the team in scoring was junior Nicole Castaldo with 18 points and seven rebounds and eighth grader Allyson Murphy, who finished eight points. The team is now 4-0 and 2-0 in conference play.

Wrestling: Mepham lost a close dual meet to Jericho on Tuesday, 38-35. The Hawks won two of the last three matches to pull away late for their first win ever over the Pirates. Jamie Dunn and Louis Hernandez picked up a pin and technical fall win, respectively.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Boys Basketball: Clarke fell to North Shore at home on Monday by a 72-63 score and also fell by way of a 71-30 loss to Oceanside on Wednesday to drop to 0-4 on the season. In the first game, Clarke trailed by two at halftime and were outscored by eight in the third quarter to widen the deficit. Both Mike Martiello and Joe Fusco led the team with 19 points.

Girls Basketball: Clarke fell in a road game to North Shore on Monday by a 71-43 score to fall to 0-6 on the season. Although the Lady Rams’ Danielle Ferrara scored a game-high 16 points, the team fell behind early due to a 26-6 first quarter in favor of North Shore.

Bowling: The Clarke girls swept East Meadow on Tuesday behind the play of Jen Raichel. The Lady Rams are now 8-1 on the season.

East Meadow

Boys Basketball: East Meadow fell to Baldwin at home on Tuesday 85-53. The Jets fell to the Bruins in the Class AA playoffs last season and are trying to rebuild a team behind Joe Campay, who had a game-high 25 points. Andrew Cunningham chipped in 10 points in the effort.

Girls Basketball: East Meadow lost to Baldwin by a 66-30 final on Tuesday. Jenn Gundrum led the Lady Jets with 11 points and Meghan Cleary had 10 in the effort against the defending county champions in Class AA.

EAST ROCKAWAY

Boys Basketball: East Rockaway controlled the game from start to finish against Carle Place to win 60-38 on Tuesday. David McClure led the way for the Rocks with 21 points and five rebounds. Mikey Lores also reached double figures with 11 points. East Rockaway is now 3-1 on the season and should contend for a Conference BC title.

Girls Basketball: East Rockaway lost to Carle Place on the road Tuesday by a 56-27 final score. Julia Koebert led the Lady Rocks with sic points in the effort.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Girls Basketball: Hewlett lost a heartbreaker to Jericho on Tuesday by way of a last-second layup to fall 57-56. Sam DiSalvo scored a game-high 28 points on 12 field goals and four free throws, but it was not enough as Jericho’s Colleen McCormack scored the game-winner. Hewlett is now 1-5 on the season.

Wrestling: Hewlett defeated Roslyn 49-32 on Tuesday in a dual meet. Rob Rosenberg won an 8-0 decision at 138 pounds and Troy Smith pinned his opponent in just 39 seconds in the 160-pound class. Hewlett is now 4-3 on the season.

Swimming: Matt Salcedo and Alex Belluccia helped Hewlett to a meet win over Division on Tuesday, 51-45. Salcedo won the 100 backstroke and Belluccia won the 50 freestyle for the 2-1 Bulldogs.

Lawrence

Girls Basketball: Lawrence fell at home to Valley Stream North 53-37 on Monday. Natalie Leger scored 14 points and Nicole Robinson added 13 points for the Lady Golden Tornadoes, who had a tough time stopping Madeline Nelson, who scored a game-high 27 points. On Wednesday, Lawrence dropped another home game to Kennedy by a 38-35 score in non-league competition. Robinson led with 13 points in that game.

Bowling: The Lawrence boys team swept Five Towns rival Hewlett on Monday to remain undefeated on the season at 7-0. Nick Mayo has been the team's top bowler all season, as he rolled a game-high 257 in the second set of the match. The girls team defeated Hewlett by a 2-1 score on the day. Joanna Deresto, who bowled a game-high 170 in the final set, led the team.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy

GARDEN CITY

Boys Basketball: Garden City led an early lead slip away and fell on the road at Division on Tuesday. After leading 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Blue Dragons outscored the Trojans by 20 in the next two quarters. Dan Bonchonsky led the team with 16 points and Steven Bradley added nine for Garden City, which is now 2-3 on the season.

Wrestling: The Trojans defeated Jericho, 42-32, and Great Neck South, 72-5, in a dual meet tournament on Tuesday. Mike Lofrese, Matt Eulau and Matt Schmelzinger were just some of the wrestlers to help Garden City to the pair of wins.

Bowling: The Garden City boys team swept Port Washington on Monday behind Nick Desarno and Doug Donnelly, who bowled a 223 in the opening set of the match. The team is now 6-1 on the season.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Boys Basketball: Division picked up its first win of the season with a 47-42 win over Garden City at home on Tuesday. Just three Blue Dragon players scored in the game, but one was Ryan Birmingham, who scored a career-high 31 points. Colby Lapp added 14 points for 1-3 Division.

Island Trees

Bowling: The Island Trees girls team defeated district rival Division on Monday by a 2-1 score. Joanna Viscuso bowled a perfect 300 game in a 754-552 game two win for the Lady Dawgs.

MacArthur

Boys Basketball: The Generals escaped with a win at Plainview JFK on Tuesday by way of a 46-44 final. Will Cheshire led the team with 15 points, including the go-ahead layup with just more than a minute remaining. Tyler Eppich added 11 points, including three three-pointers, and Kevin Roach had seven points and 10 rebounds for 3-1 MacArthur.

Girls Basketball: MacArthur defeated Plainview JFK on Tuesday by a 55-27 final. Stephanie Volpe led the Lady Generals with 15 points and eight rebounds and Amanda Gross added 12 points. The team is a perfect 4-0 on the season. 

LONG BEACH

Boys Basketball: Long Beach picked up a conference road win at Carey on Tuesday with a 50-41 result. The Marines outscored the Seahawks in each of the final three quarters to pull away in the end. Daryl Brown scored a game-high 20 points as the lone player in double-digits. William Sims added nine points for the Marines, who move to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Girls Basketball: Long Beach defeated Carey at home by a 39-33 final for its first win of the season. Molly Martin led the Lady Marines with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Perri Steiner added nine points and seven rebounds.

LYNBROOK

Boys Basketball: Lynbrook broke a four-game losing skid to start the season with a 60-50 win at Valley Stream South on Tuesday. Matt Murphy led the way with 26 points and Mike McVeigh added 16 points in the first win for the Owls (1-4) in conference play.

Girls Basketball: Lynbrook defeated Valley Stream South by a 55-19 margin. The Lady Owls displayed a strong defensive effort led by Shannon Baker, who also scored a team-high 14 points. Brooke Gerstman had eight points and 10 assists and Danielle Amaya added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Bowling: The Lynbrook girls team swept aside Baldwin on Monday behind a 176 from Jennifer Ackerman in the opening set for the Lady Owls. The team is now 6-1 on the season.

MALVERNE

Boys Basketball: Malverne blew by a visiting Cold Spring Harbor team Tuesday to win 64-42 and move to 2-0 in Conference BC. Andrew Berry looked dominant in the effort with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Two other players reached double-digit points -- Cyrus Clarke with 11 and Tim Prewitt with 10.

Girls Basketball: Malverne lost to Cold Spring Harbor on Tuesday by way of a 50-34 result. Amanda Masson led the team with 16 points and TionTaye Noel added nine points in the effort.

MERRICK

Boys Basketball: Calhoun gave a valiant effort on the road at Valley Stream Central on Tuesday, but fell by a 49-46 final. Tommy Murphy led the Colts with a game-high 22 points, including all four of the team's three-pointers. Tom Joannou added nine points for Calhoun, which is now 1-3 on the season.

Girls Basketball: Calhoun fell to Valley Stream Central at home on Monday by a 41-34 final score. The Lady Colts trailed by 13 points at the half and cold not recover in the final 16 minutes. Dana Silvester scored a game-high 13 points and Jessica Ruggerio added nine points for 2-3 Calhoun.

MINEOLA

Chaminade

No games to report so far this week. The Flyers will travel to face Lawrence on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Mineola

Boys Basketball: Mineola fell short in a non-conference road game to Bethpage on Wednesday, 71-49. Brian Gaffney scored a team-high 16 points and Mike Waszchuk added 10 in the effort. 

Girls Basketball: Mineola lost to Floral Park 50-27 on Tuesday in a non-league matchup. The defensive pressure of Floral Park caught up to the Lady Mustangs, who scored just seven second-half points. Samantha Venus led the team with nine points. The girls followed it up with an 82-52 loss to North Shore. Kerri Medlock scored 25 points and grabbed an impressive 22 rebounds in the effort.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

No games to report so far this week.

SEAFORD

Boys Basketball: Seaford fell in a road game to Roosevelt on Wednesday by a 45-30 final score. Normally the team’s high scorer, sophomore James Curley was limited to just four points in the effort. Jimmy Roell and Brian Graziose both scored seven points to lead the Vikings, who are now 2-2 on the season.

WANTAGH

Bowling: The Wantagh boys team took the first two games against Plainedge to clinch the win on Monday. Jonathan Biscardi rolled a game-high 259 in the opening set for the Warriors, who are 6-1 on the season. The girls team lost to Plainedge by a 2-1 score on the day.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Boys Basketball: West Hempstead fell in a tough conference road game to Great Neck North on Tuesday by a 61-41 final score. Tyree Glascoe led the Rams with 18 points and Pat D’Haiti added 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The team is now 1-2 on the season as conference play gets underway.

Girls Basketball: West Hempstead lost to Great Neck North at home on Tuesday by a 45-19 final score. Kara Lynch led the Lady Rams with 10 points in a loss that drops the team to 2-3 in Conference A-III this season.
