Kennedy 

Bowling: The Bellmore-Merrick boys team remained undefeated on the season at 4-0 after back-to-back wins on Monday and Tuesday. The team defeated Wantagh 3-0 first followed by a 2-1 win over Plainedge. In the first game, Mike Anagnostopoulos rolled a 286. Joe Cucinella and Tom Bianco also had several great frames in the wins.

Mepham

Boys Basketball: Mepham defeated rival Calhoun at home on Tuesday by a 56-47 final. Dan Kaminsky scored a game-high 14 points. J.T. Elsasser scored 13 and point guard Kyle Wechsler followed behind with 12, along with exceptional defense as the Pirates did not allow a Colt to reach double digits in scoring.

Clarke

Girls Basketball: Clarke fell to 0-2 on the season with a loss to host Herricks on Wednesday by a 54-28 final in the first round of the Herricks Tournament. The Lady Rams struggled in the first half and could not recover from then on out. Alyssa Colletti led the team with eight points in the effort.

East Meadow

Girls Basketball: East Meadow lost to Island Trees in the opening round of the Oyster Bay tournament. The Lady Jets couldn’t rebound from a scoreless first quarter, outscored 13-0, as they lost by a 49-31 margin. Jen Gundrum led with 10 points as the team will take on Glen Cove in a consolation game on Friday.

Bowling: The East Meadow boys team swept Westbury on Tuesday on dominating fashion: 861-529, 838-436 and 923-460. Joey Sineno rolled a 246 in the second game for the Jets, followed by a 259 by Jeffrey Juaruz in an impressive game three win. The girls team also swept the Westbury girls on the day.

Girls Basketball: East Rockaway pulled out an exciting win at East Islip in a non-league game on Wednesday. The Lady Rocks outscored their opponents 10-7 in the fourth quarter to win 33-32. Allie Lark, Shannon Pujol and Gianna Cilliffo led the way for East Rockaway in its season opener.

Hewlett

Boys Basketball: Hewlett trailed for much of the first three quarters, but pulled out a 50-48 win in the season opener at home against Roosevelt. Point guard Harrison Brenner, the lone senior for the Bulldogs, scored a game-high 20 points. Sophomore Avery Feldman followed right behind with 18 points and Weldon Irvine added eight in the win as Hewlett prepares for West Hempstead on Friday.

Girls Basketball: Hewlett lost a heartbreaker at home against Great Neck North to open up its season. The Lady Bulldogs lost the lead with just seconds remaining and fell 59-58. Sam DiSalvo poured in a game-high 22 points, followed by Val DeNapoli with 17. Hewlett had just the two scorers in double digits compared to four for Great Neck North.

Lawrence

Girls Basketball: The Golden Tornadoes fell to Floral Park on the road in their season opener by a 52-40 final score. Dina Goldstein scored a game-high 14 points for Lawrence in the effort. Nicole Robinson added nine points in the Tuesday loss as well.

Bowling: The Lawrence boys team defeated Lynbrook 3-0 on Monday: 689-678, 863-807 and 798-745 to move to 3-0 on the season. Nick Mayo and Tom Napolitano led the Golden Tornadoes in the win.

Boys Basketball: Garden City fell in its season opener on the road to Freeport by a 47-37 final on Tuesday. Eddie Blatz was the lone Trojan to reach double digits with 17 points, also a game-high. Garden City will take on Mineola on Thursday night in another non-league game.

Girls Basketball: Garden City began its run to what it hopes is another Long Island championship this season with a 61-40 win over Seaford. Kim Ryan scored a game-high 21 points, including six three-pointers. Sam Auricchio added 20 points and Christina Mangels pulled down 16 rebounds in the effort.

Bowling: The Garden City girls team collected a pair of 3-0 wins on Monday and Wednesday to advance to 3-1 on the season thus far. The Lady Trojans first defeated Manhasset in three close games followed by a convincing win over Roslyn.

Division

Girls Basketball: Division, which has replaced its whole starting lineup from last season, opened up its schedule with a 41-38 win at Uniondale on Monday. Susan Ballantyne, who is expected to lead the team this season, contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win, followed by Laura Stuart with 10 points.

Bowling: The boys team defeated district rival MacArthur on Monday by a 2-1 score: 749-635, 768-662 and 702-722. Brandon Soedarmasto rolled a game-high 276 for the Blue Dragons in the win. The girls team fell by a 2-1 score to Division.

Island Trees

Boys Basketball: Island Trees gave up a late lead to Valley Stream South on Tuesday night to fall 56-51. The Bulldogs were outscored 25-13 in the fourth quarter after heading into the final eight minutes with a 38-31 lead. Three Island Trees players scored 10 points in the effort.

Girls Basketball: Island Trees used a newly implemented high-pressure defense called “chaos” to defeat East Meadow in the Oyster Bay tournament. Brianna Wilson, who was top-20 in Nassau County in three-pointers last season, led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points. Maggie Milonakis added 13 in the win. Island Trees will play Oyster Bay in the finals on Friday.

Bowling: The Island Trees girls team swept Plainedge 3-0 on Monday afternoon, 635-587, 647-585 and 653-543. Joanna Viscuso and Emily McLoughlin led the way in the effort for the 2-1 Lady Bulldogs.

MacArthur

Bowling: The girls team defeated Division by a 2-1 score on Monday afternoon, 639-590, 437-601 and 560-502. Christina Thompson bowled the Lady Generals to victory on the day. The boys team fell to Division by a 2-1 score on the day.

No teams were in action this week.

Boys Basketball: Lynbrook came back against Bethpage in the fourth quarter, but a missed attempt by Mike McVeigh at the buzzer left the Owls short with a 47-46 loss. Matt Murphy scored a game-high 23 points in the season-opening loss. 

Girls Basketball: Despite 27 points from senior Brooke Gerstman, Lynbrook fell to North Shore by a 69-63 final on Tuesday in the Wantagh Tournament. Gerstman had 11 made field goals against a hard-pressing North Shore team. Her teammate, Danielle Amaya, added 12 points in the loss. Lynbrook will play Wantagh in a consolation game on Thursday.

Bowling: The Lynbrook girls team defeated Lawrence on Monday afternoon, 476-402, 526-337 and 615-303. Jennifer Ackerman led the Lady Owls, who remained undefeated at 3-0, in the dominating effort.

Bowling: The Malverne boys were swept by Valley Stream Central on Tuesday and the girls side lost 2-1 to the same school. Both teams are still in search of their first wins on the season.

Boys Basketball: Calhoun lost its season opener to district rival Mepham on the road Thursday by a 56-47 final. Chris Melito led the Colts with nine points, as eight different players got into the scoring column. Calhoun will take on a talented Freeport team on Friday night.

Chaminade

Boys Basketball: Chaminade, which will be challenging itself with tough non-league games early in the season, took down Salesian, a school from the New Rochelle area, by a 77-32 final on Tuesday. Eleven different players scored in the win, led by 13 points from Patrick Farrell and 11 from Brian Earhardt. Mike Walsh added 10 points and nine rebounds as well.

Mineola

Girls Basketball: Mineola defeated Plainedge by a 50-40 final on Tuesday thanks to a triple-double by Kerri Medlock, who had a game-high 27 points, along with 16 rebounds and 10 steals. Fifteen of her points came from the free throw line. Addie McKeever added 10 points in the win.

Bowling: The Mineola boys team swept aside Locust Valley on Wednesday to earn its first win of the season. The girls team also collected a win on the day against Locust Valley by a 2-1 final score.

Girls Basketball: The Lady Cyclones hosted the South Side Holiday Tournament this week. The girls first defeated Valley Stream South by a 51-33 score on Tuesday, but fell in the finals to Sacred Heart by a 41-34 final on Wednesday. In the two games, Allison Bannon had 16 points. Ten players scored at least two points in the win over Valley Stream South.

Girls Basketball: Seaford had a tough task to open up its season against visiting Garden City. The Lady Vikings fell by a 61-40 final on Monday. Meaghan Curley was the lone player in double digits for her team with 13 in the effort. Seaford will play Division at home on Thursday afternoon.

Boys Basketball: Wantagh has had a tough start to its season thus far with two losses in three days this week. The Warriors now stand at 0-3 overall after a 57-54 loss to Locust Valley in the first round of the Wantagh Tournament on Monday, followed by a 48-31 loss against Syosset in the tournament’s consolation bracket. Gerard Roche had 26 combined points in the two games and Justice Perez had 21.

Girls Basketball: Wantagh lost in the first game of its own tournament to Sewanhaka by a 47-38 final. Demi Valenti led the Lady Warriors with 15 points, followed by freshman center Alex Parlato with 14. Wantagh will now play Brooke Gerstman and Lynbrook in a consolation game on Thursday.

Girls Basketball: West Hempstead lost a close game at home to Great Neck South by a 45-39 final score. Jackie Christenson led the Lady Rams with 10 points in their season opener. Seven different players scored for West Hempstead in the effort as the girls will now prepare for Westbury on Friday afternoon.
