Sports Digest: Nov. 3-6, Playoff Results

An interactive, daily digest of scores from schools in the Town of Hempstead and a place for you to add information and images for all youth sports.

BELLMORE

Youth Softball: The Bellmore Blue Fire U-10 girls softball team has just won its third tournament of the year defeating North Bellmore-North Merrick 3-2 in the finals of the East Meadow Fall Classic. Bellmore, since the summer season began, is an incredible 29-1-1. Bellmore is led by a very strong pitching rotation of Danielle Polirer, Kaitlyn Judd and Amanda Maffucci. Needing three victories in the playoff rounds to get to the final, Bellmore pitcher Amanda Maffucci dominated the East Meadow Fillies Blue team with eight strikeouts over four innings. In the semifinals, Bellmore faced the East Meadow Gold team. Bellmore won 9-1 with dominant hitting. Four doubles from Kaitlyn Judd, Alexandra Frankel, Samantha Bendig and Sarah Porcellini led Bellmore to a matchup with a very tough North Bellmore-North Merrick team. The championship game was a pitching duel with Bellmore coming out on top by one run on a passed ball. Danielle Polirer pitched six innings of two-hit ball combined with defensive plays by Bellmore’s infield to clinch the title. Bellmore is wrapping up the softball season with its last tournament of the year this weekend in Ronkonkoma.

Kennedy

Football: The unprecedented run for No. 8 Kennedy came to an end last Saturday with a 42-7 loss to top-seeded Garden City. The Cougars won their last five games after dropping the first three to make the Class II playoffs. Chris Racalbuto scored the lone touchdown for Kennedy in the second quarter and Ralph Faiella had an interception on defense. Matt Delbianco, Tom Ferner and Joe LoPalo gave great effort in the backfield all season for Kennedy, along with the rest of the Cougars, who close their season with a 5-4 record.

Boys Volleyball: No. 2 Kennedy remained alive in the Class B playoffs with a sweep over No. 7 Great Neck South, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-23. Senior captain Ben Canarick knows very well what it's like to win a county title, as the Cougars have won the last three. He led the team with 11 kills on offense and six blocks at the net. Matt Murphy added 12 kills and Steven Gassert added 10 in the rout of the Rebels. Kennedy will play No. 3 Roslyn in the semifinals on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at SUNY-Old Westbury.

Mepham

Football: No. 6 Mepham closed out its season with a 14-7 loss to No. 3 Elmont, 14-7, on the road. The Spartans took a 14-0 lead into the final quarter when Shane Agostino cut the lead in half with a three-yard touchdown reception from A.J. Heller in the fourth. Elmont withstood a short-lived drive by the Pirates late in the final quarter with a chance to tie. Mepham, which started the season at 3-0, closes out the season with a 4-5 record.

Girls Soccer: No. 4 Mepham scored early against No. 9 Calhoun by way of a goal from sophomore Emily Schmitt in the Class AA semifinals. However, a last-minute goal by the Lady Colts tied the score at 1-1 followed by a penalty kick goal in the first overtime period. Senior Alexa Rinaudo recorded six saves in her final game in between the posts as the Lady Pirates finish at 7-7-2 overall.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Girls Volleyball: Clarke first defeated West Hempstead in the quarterfinals of the Class B playoffs behind 12 kills from sophomore Julia Cast and eight kills from senior Tiffany Winans. However, the Lady Rams fell in their next match in the semifinals to top-ranked Seaford in straight sets to conclude the season at an even 8-8 record.

East Meadow

Football: No. 2 East Meadow will be moving on to the Class I semifinals after itdefeated No. 7 Uniondale 65-26 on Saturday. After David Zea (68 yards) and Robbie Healy (212 yards) scored rushing touchdowns to give the Jets a 14-7 lead. Uniondale answered back to take a 21-14 lead of its own after a second and third touchdown from William Stanback. However, Zea added a second touchdown on the ground, followed by four consecutive touchdowns by Healy to blow the game wide open. James D’Elia added 117 rushing yards as well as East Meadow moves on to play No. 5 Massapequa at Hofstra on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Football: No. 7 Hewlett had a tall task in trying to defeat its first round opponent in No. 2 Lawrence on Saturday. However, the Bulldogs fell behind late and eventually fell 62-32 to close oust their season at 4-5 overall. Hewlett led 3-0 early, but Lawrence scored 35 of the next 42 points in the game only to have the Bulldogs score 22 straight points to pull within three at 35-32. Despite the comeback, Lawrence would pull away in the second half to win it. Jeremy Leguillo scored two rushing touchdowns, along with one from Sam Martorella in the season-ending loss.

Lawrence

Football: No. 2 Lawrence let No. 7 Hewlett hang around until the end in the first time the two Five Towns rivals played. On Saturday, it was more of the same as the Golden Tornadoes outscored the Bulldogs 20-0 in the fourth quarter to win big, 62-32. Junior Tyler Fredericks rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns, along with a receiving touchdown from Joey Capobianco. Senior Ryan Fredericks ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns to cap off one of the most dominating ground game performances for Lawrence this season. Eddie Robinson added a touchdown reception and a pair of fumble recoveries for Lawrence, which will play No. 3 Lynbrook at Hofstra on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Boys Volleyball: No. 6 Lawrence saw its season come to a close, suffering a quarterfinal sweep to No. 3 Roslyn on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes previously defeated Bethpage in the opening round, led by Tommy and C.J. Bortfitz, but the team concludes the season at 4-10 overall after the loss over the weekend.

GARDEN CITY

Football: No. 1 Garden City cruised to a 42-7 first-round win in the Class II playoffs over No. 8 Kennedy. Running back Mark Ellis rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns and Patric Berkery caught a 27-yard touchdown from Brett Stewart after missing the last five games of the regular season. The defense forced two turnovers and added a touchdown by Rob Savage for the Trojans, who, at 9-0, move on to face No. 4 Carey at Hofstra on Friday at 4 p.m.

Girls Soccer: No. 3 Garden City was eliminated from the Class A playoffs after a 1-0 loss to No. 2 South Side on Saturday at Denton Avenue. The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Cyclones last season for the Class A championship. Garden City closes out its impressive season at 9-3-5.

Girls Volleyball: No. 5 Garden City had a tough task in trying to take down the defending Long Island champion Wantagh Lady Warriors. The Lady Trojans previously defeated No. 12 Great Neck South and No. 4 Manhasset to reach the semifinals, where they lost in four hard fought sets on Friday. Garden City closes out its season with an 8-9 overall record.

Field Hockey: The top-seeded Lady Trojans defeated No. 2 Cold Spring Harbor by a 3-0 score for the Class B championship on Sunday afternoon at Adelphi. Alexandra Bruno led the way with two goals and an assist. She also had a goal in a 2-0 win over Clarke in the semifinals. Jenna Fuchs added a goal on Sunday as well. Garden City will play for the Class B Long Island championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Stony Brook University.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Football: No. 6 Division couldn’t keep up with a dominant Lynbrook offense on Saturday, as the Blue Dragons fell by a 33-13 score to end their season at 6-3. Quarterback Dylan Cardno threw for two touchdown passes, a 73-yarder to Jon Muller and a 12-yarder to Brian Pedersen. Division won four of its final five regular season games to make the playoffs in an exceptional season overall.

Girls Soccer: No. 1 Division earned a spot in the Class A finals with a 3-1 win over No. 5 Plainedge on Saturday afternoon. Maggie Carew came through again with a pair of goals, along with a goal and an assist from Susan Ballantyne. Krista Fitzpatrick assisted her teammates on two of the three goals in the win. Division will play No. 2 South Side on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Denton Avenue Field for the Class A championship.

Island Trees

Boys Soccer: No. 2 Island Trees is moving on to the Class A finals after it defeated No. 6 Great Neck North by a 1-0 final on Thursday. Senior J.T. Famularo put in the game's lone goal past Eber Blanco after a perfect cross from sophomore Adonis Martinez in the 69th minute. The Bulldogs will now face No. 9 Jericho on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Hofstra for the county title.

MacArthur

Football: No. 3 MacArthur remained even with No. 6 Oceanside for three quarters in its Class I first-round matchup at home on Friday night. However, a 22-0 fourth quarter for the Sailors brought the Generals' season to an end with a 7-2 record, their first loss since the season opener against Freeport. Tom Kelleher had two total touchdowns and Will Cheshire had a 60-yard reception for a score from Gerard Cunningham, who had three touchdowns when MacArthur defeated Oceanside, 20-18, on Oct. 22. 

Girls Soccer: No. 2 MacArthur steamrolled defending state champion Massapequa by a 3-0 final in the Class AA semifinals on Friday afternoon. Jill Mulholland scored twice, along with an assist, and Christina Cottone added one for the now 14-2-0 Lady Generals. Jenna Cozza needed just three saves for the shutout as the defense, led by Jenny Scro, was dominant all game. MacArthur will play No. 9 Calhoun (16-0-2) for the Class AA title on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Denton Avenue Field.

LONG BEACH

Football: No. 5 Long Beach saw its season come to a close with a 26-12 loss at No. 4 Carey on Saturday. Tom Rowley threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to John Delahanty, followed by a 75-yard run to the end zone, but the Seahawks remained in front of the Marines for the extent of the game. The playoff loss was the second time Long Beach fell to Carey this season, as the team finishes at 5-4 overall.

Boys Volleyball: No. 4 Long Beach advanced to 13-4 overall this season after defeating No. 5 Syosset in four sets in a Class A quarterfinal match. Andrew Still led the offense with 35 assists, with Bret O’Neil and Adam Lazare helping out with 10 kills each. The Marines will have their toughest task, a meeting with top-ranked and undefeated Massapequa, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra. 

LYNBROOK

Football: No. 3 Lynbrook improved to a 6-3 record with a 33-13 win over No. 6 Division on Saturday, the second time the Owls defeated the Blue Dragons this season. Luke Spitzer took the opening kickoff to the end zone and later added two rushing touchdowns on 158 yards in the win. Anthony Rainone caught two touchdown passes, one from Spitzer and another from Alex Weingarten. Matt Trotta, the teams leading tackler, added seven tackles and an interception on defense along with two sacks from Joe Martingale. Lynbrook will play No. 2 Lawrence at Hofstra on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a rematch of the 2010 County Finals.

MALVERNE 

Girls Volleyball: No. 3 Malverne kept its season alive with a four-set win over No. 2 Carle Place on Saturday in the Class C semifinals. Karen Ulysse led the offense with 10 kills. Danielle Hinds had six kills and six blocks at the net on defense. Malverne, which is now 13-3 on the season, will play No. 1 East Rockaway for the Class C title on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at SUNY Old Westbury.

MERRICK

Girls Soccer: No. 9 Calhoun shocked No. 4 Mepham on Friday night in a 2-1 overtime victory in the Class AA semifinals. After the Lady Pirates led for much of the game, Jessica Foley put in the game-tying goal past Alexa Rinaudo in the final minute. In overtime, Kristina Gandolfo was taken down in the box, resulting in an eventual penalty kick goal for Mary Hijazi. The Lady Colts held on through the second overtime period to advance to the finals, where they will play No. 2 MacArthur on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Denton Avenue Field.

Boys Cross Country: The Colts boys cross-country team continued its recent domination of Conference II by clinching a team conference championship at the Oct. 31 Nassau Conference Championships. Zach Toner led the way with a 17:00.3 finish (second overall in the conference), with teammates Christopher Landi (6th place at 17:29.9) and Jack Curran (7th place at 17:34.2) helping to pace the Colts to 36 points, easily outpacing second place Garden City with 73 points. In the Nov. 5 Nassau State Qualifier meet at Bethpage State Park, Zach Toner finished 7th in the county with a time of 16:46.9, with teammate Christopher Landi following closely behind at 16:50.7 for the 8th-place finish.

Girls Swimming: The Bellmore-Merrick girls swimming team capped another strong season with a second-place finish in the Nov. 5 Nassau County championships held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park. The team scored 427 points to finish second only to Garden City's 534 total to notch a 13th-straight County championship. The state tournament in Buffalo on Nov. 19 will feature several members of the Bellmore-Merrick squad.    

MINEOLA

Football: No. 8 Mineola fell behind early at No. 1 Locust Valley and could not recover in its opening-round Class IV playoff game on Saturday, losing 39-13. Quarterback Rob Clarkin threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to Brian Gaffney and another to Nico Pantelides. The highlight of the season for the Mustangs was a comeback overtime victory at home against Seaford on Oct. 14. Mineola ends its season at 4-5 overall. 

Girls Volleyball: No. 2 Mineola fell in a semifinals heartbreaker to No. 3 Floral Park in five sets on Saturday afternoon at Roslyn High School. The Lady Mustangs dropped the first two sets, but fought courageously to win the next two, 25-18 and 25-22, before conceding the decisive fifth set. Mineola closes out its season at 10-5 overall.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Girls Soccer: No. 2 South Side earned a spot in the Class A finals along with top-ranked Division with a 1-0 win over No. 3 Garden City on Saturday. Christina Klaum scored the lone goal to increase her total to seven in three playoff games for the Lady Cyclones. Kelsey Berki was stellar in goal with 12 saves. The championship game is set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Denton Avenue Field.

Girls Volleyball: No. 2 South Side eliminated No. 6 Herricks in five dramatic sets on Friday in the Class A semifinals. The Lady Cyclones fell behind 2-1 in sets, but rebounded to win the next two by scores of 25-20 and 25-19. Kayla Principato led the offense with 17 kills. Allison Glass followed with 14 kills as well as 22 digs on defense. South Side will play No. 1 Wantagh in the finals on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at SUNY-Old Westbury.

SEAFORD

Football: No. 4 Seaford was defeated by No. 5 Valley Stream North at home in the opening round of the Class IV playoffs, 21-16. Tyler O’Donnell threw a touchdown pass to Nick Fischetti to give the Vikings the early lead, but Billy Patsos scored twice for Valley Stream to give his team a 14-6 lead at half. Fischetti scored a second touchdown to follow up a 30-yard field goal by Matt Murphy, but Seaford came up short in the end to close out its season at 5-4 overall and end a run of four consecutive Nassau County Class IV championships.

Girls Volleyball: No. 1 Seaford swept aside No. 4 Clarke on Saturday night at Roslyn High School to earn a spot in the Class B finals. Meaghan Curley had four kills and 10 assists, Jessica Rini, just a sophomore, added seven kills, and Juliana Puleo helped out with six kills and four aces, including a stretch of 14 straight service points in the third and final set. Seaford will play No. 3 Floral Park for the title on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at SUNY Old Westbury.

WANTAGH

Football: No. 2 Wantagh blew by No. 7 New Hyde Park in the opening round of the Class II playoffs by way of a 40-7 win. While the Warriors relied on a strong running game all season, quarterback Nick Mullen led them with 202 passing yards and four touchdowns on Saturday. Brian Von Bargen caught five passes for 184 yards, a season-high, three of which went for touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown and six tackles on defense, which did not let up a point, in the win. The only score given up was on a kickoff return in the third quarter. Shaun Charkowick and Gerard Roche capped the scoring with a touchdown each as Wantagh moves on to face No. 3 Elmont at Hofstra on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Volleyball: Top-ranked Wantagh defeated No. 5 Garden City in the Class A semifinals to set up a meeting with No. 2 South Side in the finals next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at SUNY-Old Westbury. Carly Simeone has been a leader on offense all season, as she collected 34 assists to go along with 16 digs. Geri Sciolto led the dig category with 33. Gabi Dineglio helped out the offense with 11 kills, as well as 18 digs on defense. Jenny Ilibassi and Lauren Pennino played well in the four-set win over the Lady Trojans.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Football: No. 3 West Hempstead fell in the first round of the Class IV playoffs at home to No. 6 East Rockaway, 36-21. The Rocks scored two first-quarter touchdowns and never relinquished the lead to the Rams, who finish the season with a 6-3 record. Danny Sheeler led the offense in the effort with a 60-yard touchdown reception from Bruno DeVito and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. He was also 3-for-3 on extra point attempts. Justin Boatwright, the team's leading rusher this season, scored on a 60-yard run in the third quarter.

Boys Volleyball: No. 5 West Hempstead saw its season come to a close with a five-set loss to No. 4 Jericho on Saturday. The Rams won the first set 29-27 before dropping the next two. They came back to win the fourth, 25-22 before conceding the decisive fifth set. The team previously defeated Plainedge in straight sets on Thursday. West Hempstead closes out its season at 6-8 overall.
