West Hempstead Rams Ready For Tough Rivals

The Rams look to improve on last year's 4-4 record

"We expect to do better this year," says Dominic Carre, head coach of West Hempstead High School's varsity football team.

The Rams return this year having lost a good number of players to graduation but with some key members who will help them contend in a tough Conference 4 this season.

"There will be no easy games on our schedule in a conference where every team is good," Carre adds.

Although they no longer have leading rusher Tayvon Hall, the Rams will still boast a strong backfield with the return of senior Justin Boatwright and junior Michael Petrizzo.

Bruno Devito will be back at quarterback and Danny Sheeler will be the main guy in the wide receiver position after the departure of Brandon Zapelli. Sheeler will also play the safety spot along with senior Bruce Gibbs.

The defensive line will return a couple of solid players in Dan Njoku and Steffan Viera. Christian Jean-Louis will also help to stuff opposing teams' offenses in the defensive backfield.

"I think we got on track with a couple of nice wins last season and we hope to continue that trend this year," said Carre.

The Rams will hold an opening season scrimmage on Sept. 2 at Island Trees. Their first game will be at Oyster Bay on Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.

Other tough teams they will play in conference include Seaford, Roosevelt and East Rockaway.
