WH Native Named CAA ‘Rookie of the Year’ with Hofstra Lax

Hofstra University freshman attacker/midfielder Becky Conto was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year last week during the annual awards banquet on the eve of the conference championship.

The Pride also placed three players on the CAA All-Rookie team as Conto, Rockville Centre freshman attacker Emily Considine and freshman defender Shelby Milne, of Camillus, N.Y., earned a spot on the team.

Conto has had a spectacular freshman campaign so far in 2013. A five-time CAA Rookie of the Week honoree -- March 25, April 8, April 15, April 22 and April 29 -- she ranks third on the Pride in scoring with 19 points on 15 goals and four assists.

The West Hempstead native really made her impact in draw controls as she leads Hofstra with 52, while also chipping in with 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. She had a Hofstra individual season-high nine draw controls against Old Dominion, while also scoring a career-high four goals versus George Mason.

Conto’s great season so far with draw controls has her ranked 45th nationally. She leads the CAA in draw controls.

The Sacred Heart Academy graduate started for West Hempstead's varsity program as an eighth grader at West Hempstead Middle School.
