Year in Review: Top Fall Sports Stories of 2010

The MacArthur Generals, Division Blue Dragons and Island Trees Bulldogs gave fans a lot to cheer about in 2010.

With three competitive high schools, some of Long Island's top athletes and tons of dedicated fans, Levittown is a great place for sports. Fall 2010 was filled with exciting football, soccer, tennis and volleyball, and Levittown Patch was on the sidelines getting the play-by-play scoop.

Now that the year is over and we are into the winter season of basketball and wrestling, let's take a moment to look back at the moments that make the list of Levittown Patch's Top Fall Sports Stories of 2010.

9. The Island Trees Bulldogs came out on top in their homecoming football game, beating the Mineola Mustangs 20-10 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Tailback David Grecsek ran for 104 yards and brought in two touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

8. The MacArthur Generals were victorious at their spirited homecoming celebration as well, trampling Hempstead 41-14. The Generals made their school proud with six touchdowns, half of which were scored by senior running back Tom Joyce.

7. Island Trees turned a Saturday night football game into a strong display of support for the fight against Breast Cancer in October, as the community gathered in the stands dressed in pink.

6. The MacArthur Lady Generals varsity soccer team finished the 2010 regular season undefeated with a 6-0 win against Port Washington. MacArthur shot ahead early with five goals in the first half, and the Generals' goalie, Tracy Mitzelman, accumulated three saves and her 11th shutout of the season.

5. The Island Trees Lady Dawgs varsity soccer team finished the 2010 regular season with back-to-back triumphs over Seaford and North Shore, beating the only two teams who had previously defeated them and improving their standings in Conference VII to just one point below second place.

4. MacArthur girls varsity tennis defeated Mepham 6-1 for their second Conference III title in the past two years, a huge feat after MacArthur went 25 years without a championship.

3. The men of Island Trees varsity soccer brought their A-game to the playoffs, beating Valley Stream North with a shocking overtime goal scored by defender Casey Hastings. They topped the victory off with another overtime victory in their next game against Jericho, this time with a rocket to the net by Andrew Willoughby.

2. In a tragic playoff loss, the MacArthur Lady Generals fell to Oceanside 2-1 in sudden death tripple-overtime after a controversial call disallowed the winning goal shot by Amanda Cantos with 4:19 remaining in the third overtime period. As the ball rolled into the back of the net, Cantos was called for goalie interference.

1. After leading his team through the 2010 season, MacArthur General Tommy Joyce won the ultimate Nassau County football honor: the Tom Thorpe Memorial Award, given to the most outstanding player in the county.
