On the Farm: Summer Squash, Sweet Corn and Cookies

A weekly look at what's available at the Malverne farm stand.

Wondering what's growing and going on at , Nassau County's very own farm situated in the village of Malverne?

We'll keep you informed with our weekly "On the Farm" column. Every Friday afternoon, we'll fill you in on what fresh crops have been recently harvested and ready for your kitchen, what locally grown produce and gourmet items have been delivered to the farm stand and what events will be taking place that week.

Here's our latest update from Farmer Bill Walsh, the Nassau Land Trust (the non-profit that operates the farm) and the rest of the crew at Crossroads.

FARMER'S UPDATE

Finding produce for the farm stand can be difficult in suburban Nassau County! Farmers must consider many factors before selling or buying their produce, including seasonality, plant yields, future plantings, transportation, retail prices at farmers markets, and wholesale prices for stores.

Our farm stand sources from fellow Long Island farmers first & foremost. To include certified organic crops, we've also begun including local farmers from southern New York State and producers in New York City. As our own fields take shape and reach their productive potential, we'll be able to be one of Nassau County's first certified organic farms!
