Lynbrook Resident Joins Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer

Lynbrook resident Cathy Bien will join thousands of tri-state area residents in support of her mother’s battle with pancreatic cancer by participating in The Lustgarten Foundation’s 13th annual Long Island Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk.

The walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Jones Beach.

The Lustgarten Foundation is the nation’s largest private foundation dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research. 100 percent of every dollar that Cathy and her fellow walkers raise will go directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Cathy’s mother Kathleen Ryder, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, has always been a healthy and active person. That’s why the family was shocked to discover last October that she had pancreatic cancer.

Looking for a way to honor her mother’s nearly one-year battle, Cathy was excited to find out about the Foundation’s Long Island walk when she saw a curePC public service announcement on television. curePC is a public awareness campaign created by Cablevision and The Lustgarten Foundation to draw attention to the urgent need to find a cure.

Cathy quickly registered her family and friends to join the walk for the first time as Team “GG,” a short form of her mother’s longtime nickname “Glamorous Grandma.” Her mother Kathleen is determined to join them.

Cathy believes that participating in the walk is a moving and inspirational way to celebrate her mother’s survival. And, for Cathy, it is also fulfilling to know that 100 percent of all money she raises goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

“It is because of exceptionally dedicated individuals like Cathy that we’re able to raise much-needed awareness of pancreatic cancer and raise funds that will go directly to advancing important research aimed at developing early detection tests, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure,” said Lustgarten Foundation Executive Director Kerri Kaplan.

The Lustgarten Foundation’s Long Island Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk at Jones Beach will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 13, with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. For more information about the walk or to register, please visit www.curePC.org.
